• ** REMEMBER! **The microwave can still shock you even unplugged!!

ALWAYS discharge the high-voltage capacitor first if you even think your hands will come close to any HIGH VOLTAGE components.

Jeff mentions this: Anything in the high voltage ( magnetron, capacitor, diode, wires to and from ):
...Use a metal ( not the shiny chrome type ) screw driver with a insulated handle to short across ( touch both at the same time ) the terminals of the high voltage capacitor to discharge it.

The bottom door switch on our 2007 microwave keeps going out. I’ve had to replace it twice in the last 6 months. Anything else to check to stop burning them up?
Thanks.

Hi,

What switch are you putting in? The original ones says that the switch is NLA.

This one looks like a suitable replacement:

If there are any pitting or discolouration on the wire terminals, replace them at the same time.

I replaced it with one from a local appliance parts dealer. I’ll have to pull it out and see.

What is NLA?

The other switches looked fine the first time but I did replace all of them to make sure. I’ll find out tomorrow when I pull the oven out to see which one, but last time it was the bottom one which is a normally closed one.

Thanks!

What is NLA?

NLA = No Longer Available.

it was the bottom one which is a normally closed one.

It should be normally open......and the door holds it closed.

Thanks. Finding and replacing the switch is fairly straight forward, I’m just trying to figure out why it keeps failing. This will be the third switch in 6 months.

Show us ( pics are great ) the switch you are using. How has the switch failed 3 times?

The first pics are the failed switch. It’s the bottom one of the three. The one with the orange button is the new one. The failed one looks melted next to one of the terminals and it’s bent. The red button also does not spring back up.

Last time it failed the button still sprang up, but there was no continuity.

Edit: I see I have the wrong one to replace the bottom one…going to get the correct one.

Says 16 amps on the grey switch which should be ok.....but I have found them to be a lower quality than the black body versions....JMO!
Definitely getting too hot and melting the body plastic. Make sure the spade connectors are tight on the switch terminals.

The same switch has gone out again. I’m not really wanting to replace this microwave but can’t keep doing this either.

One thing we’ve noticed that seems to be different from other microwaves we’ve owned is that when the door gets closed, the turntable rotates slightly and the fan motor runs for about a second then shuts off. Is this normal, or may be contributing to the switch burning out? It does not do this when I remove the switch that keeps failing so the door closing seems to trigger this through that switch.

Thanks

How long has this been happening?

Either board is sticking on or door switch mechanism is sticking, warped door, something obstructing the door from closing and keeping those on.

It’s worked that way since we purchased this house last December. When I first replaced the switch, it already had a replacement switch in it so it appears this was an on going issue.

I’ve looked closely at the switch mechanism and it would appear normal (but obviously I’m not the expert). The way it works on this one is it seems the bottom switch (the one that burns out) gets released with the push of the door open button, then the other two are released when the door actually opens. Then the opposite when its closed. If I hold the door close and push the button to open the door and release, it does the little short burst of turning the turntable and running the fan, then off.

I’m pretty much to the point of calling out a repair technician. It’s a great microwave otherwise so to me worth it (and I hope cheaper) to repair than to replace.

Normally 2 switches open and the short switch closes when the door is opened.

No use to keep throwing switches at it and might be the best idea to have someone else check it out.
