Door Seal Gasket MLG2000AWW Stack Unit or MAH4000AWW (Hole in Top) Neptune

I have a couple of older Maytag washers that use a rubber gasket to seal the door. I notice that there is a hole punched out on one of them and the same hole is not punched out on the other. Is it OK to have it punched out? Will it leak?

I don't know why its there but if water ever got that high it would likely leak in many other places first. I'm guessing it might allow the gasket to compress better to ease closing of the door.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable with this specific issue will chime in.
