My annual 5E clogging and thorough disassembly and cleaning went well until I ran the diagnostics. Dishwasher was empty with no water. Starting diagnostics was tricky with buttons not reacting to my fingertips. Once I was in diag I heard no audible activity. No drain, water in or out. Cycling through each test and eventually the heater. During the heating cycle I watched it go past 60 and I stopped it manually at 71 degrees. Quite hot and started to smell. Several Power on restarts flashed HE. Unplugged and connected and finally appeared cool enough to try Diagnostics.
Poured in about 1/2 gallon of water and went through each cycle until heater test. Stayed at 30. started a Quick cycle which ran, soap used, dishes clean, but reported HE error. Warm interior probably just from regular water temperature.
Did the overheating burn out the heater, sensor or????

Hi,

Here's the service manual for this model: https://www.dropbox.com/s/py1aubwqfpsee1w/DMT800_610_400_350_7933_DW80F800_600_v05_20130515.pdf?dl=0

Watch this video to ohm test it: Heating Element Testing Video

Make sure you disconnect power to the dishwasher first.

Here's the heating element for your model below, there is also a video in the heating element part link that shows you how to access it. Make sure the breaker is off to your dishwasher first before accessing and ohm testing it.

Thanks again Jake for the link. I laready have the manual downloaded and read the 2 descriptions. Will test resistance tomorrow. Do you know why the first diagnostic run would have not pumped water in/out?
I just read elesewhere about having difficulty with the buttons not responding when trying to get into diagnostic mode. If indications are a bad circuit board, I am wondering if it pays to replace it or consider a new machine. (Looking into Bosch).

No, I don't.

That would be a wise choice to save the repair money and get a new dishwasher.:)

After a couple of days I thought I would try diagnostics again before removing the machine and disassembling internals.
Tests ran ok except the Hd which showed temp climbing only to 34 after about 15 minutes. Pressed Normal to continue remaining tests.
Ran a Quick wash which resulted in HE error and noticed a 39 which I assume is the sensor reading a final internal temp.

Today I tested the heating element and it shows no resistance. I am going to order the replacement heater as you recommended and hope it will allow us to hang on to this machine for a few more years. If it fails testing or running a wsh cycle, could I return this part?

(Replacement BOSCH 300 or 500 series is currently selling around $1,000 at BestBuy)

Yes, the new heating element should fix it.:)

Yes, AppliancePartsPros and RepairClinic Always has a 365 day warranty on ALL parts.
