• ** REMEMBER! **The microwave can still shock you even unplugged!!

ALWAYS discharge the high-voltage capacitor first if you even think your hands will come close to any HIGH VOLTAGE components.

Jeff mentions this: Anything in the high voltage ( magnetron, capacitor, diode, wires to and from ):
...Use a metal ( not the shiny chrome type ) screw driver with a insulated handle to short across ( touch both at the same time ) the terminals of the high voltage capacitor to discharge it.

So I have a customer that has a Frigidaire microwave FGMV176NTF that was tripping breaker as soon as you hit start.

I opened and checked the door switches. The top one was black, much like the Frigidaire switches I have, and the bottom two were grey (one NO one NC) and both were bad, one wouldn't click at all, other was overly squishy.

I swapped them both with the black Frigidaire switches I had on hand, and it ran fine and heated water in 1 min test.

I left and got a call that they were heating something and 3-4 minutes in, the breaker tripped again.

I asked if they switch it on would it run again or is it turning off immediately? They said it continued running so not shutting off immediately.

Any ideas? The switch housing is a really solid piece of hard plastic and didn't seem worn. It's odd to me that it would trip breaker 3-4 minutes in, and just work again.

Tripping breaker on start is usually switches. Blowing breaker well after start is either a weak breaker or too much current draw. Very likely a failing magnetron. If you replace it, I’d recommend replacing the capacitor and diode as well.

It's what I feared. I'm wondering if it's maybe the breaker. It's on the same breaker as the oven, though it's gas so it's not usually on, nor requires much power.

My experience with failing mags is they usually aren't heating, but I learn something new everyday.

I guess it bothers me that it wasn't working and was clearly a switch problem, and now it's working, but then it trips a few minutes in, frustrating to feel unsure.

See if this applies: Also just found this on the Automatic Replacement or Repair List. Page 5 underlined in Red:

Very interesting. Thank you for this information. I guess there is an odd issue with them... Where did you find this information?
