Hello,

Original Problem/Complaint, my Frigidaire fridge is no longer cooling, but the freezer is still freezing/working.

With the most common complaint being the condenser fan broken, I disassembled the bottom of the refrigerator, removed the fan and tested it with a 12v DC source. Not broken, fan works fine.

Evaporator however was very frozen up. Used a hair dryer to melt all the ice and snow off and put just enough of the fridge back together to test to see if it was going to work.

For first few days, everything was fine, Fridge cool, Freezer frozen.

Now evaporator looks to be freezing over again.

Is this because I didn't put the other front shield in place that covers the evaporator and the heater for it cannot work properly, or because of one of the following could be broken,

- 240356229 DEFROST HEATER
- 5303918776 THERMISTOR, FREEZER DEFROST, NTC, W/CONNECTORS
- 5304521781 THERMOSTAT,LIMITER/SAFETY
- some other problem

What would be a good next step?

Thank you,

David.

Hi David, Well, if the evaporator coil was frozen before you removed the evap cover, then you have a defrost part that is bad.

Did you ohm test the defrost heater with a multimeter?

Yes, you are correct, yours is: 240356229 DEFROST HEATER

If the defrost heater is good, then its most likely the evaporator thermistor(THERMISTOR, FREEZER DEFROST, NTC), that controls the defrost heater. The safety thermostat is only for if the defrost heater does not turn off, so we can eliminate that.

For the 5303918776 THERMISTOR, FREEZER DEFROST, NTC, W/CONNECTORS its been out-of-stock for a while now.

You can read this thread, others are waiting for it too:

You can see what @JRyu did in post #45 here:
Is there no way to use another thermistor and just cut the wire and crimp it?
Yes, You can do it. Find a 10K ntc thermister and splice it. You can find it in electronics store as like www.digikey.com and you can buy it under $10. Find 10K ntc probe type thermister. Good luck!

I tested the defrosting coil and it reads 25 ohms, so that is not the problem.

Looked on Digikey and Mouser, there are 1000's of thermistor choices, and I don't know enough to know which one to pick.

Strange pn 5303918776 does not cross over to another part from another Fridge.

What are the chances it is a control board, and do you know where I can find it on this Fridge?

Thank you, David.

Edit: Found the control board in the little slide out under the Fridge, nothing obvious, no popped caps etc, on board.

No, I doubt its the control board, 99% of the time its that evaporator defrost thermistor.

Hello again,

Following the tech data sheet, In SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC MODE do test 39--->Freezer Evaporator Thermistor, it shows -5ºC which is within a few degrees of what a thermometer shows when placed in the freezer.

Does that mean the Thermistor is okay?

Was it within 10 degrees of the evaporator coil LOCATION where it was at, did you measure that temperature with a laser thermometer at the same time?

-5 C is 23 F

Ever since the covid pandemic, yes. Especially on that Frigidaire thermistor.
