bought a used fridge for my daughter's garage. freezer freezes solid, drinks don't get cold enough. put some thermometers in it - and the fridge is definitely warmer than it should be (has never gotten under 50 degrees). took off the upper control panel and checked to see if the damper vent was frozen, it was not (although it was almost entirely closed). so i popped the damper vent open to make sure it wasnt seized and reassembled. gave it time to cool down, then put my hand in front of the damper vent in the fridge and discovered not much flow. appears the vent had closed from the open state (which i pried open when i had it disassembled). took it apart again and pried the vent open, this time putting dowels in the opening to prevent it from closing again. finally the fridge showed signs of cooling down to about 40 degrees. i was concerned about it continuing to cool too low or damaging the damper vent/motor so i took the dowels out. the vents then closed and temps went back up.

i (wrongly) hypothesized the thermistor assembly (OEM part 242278801) must be bad sending bad (too cool) fridge temp to the controller. i (finally) found one and installed it yesterday. no improvement. the damper vent and motor seem to be closing the vent, but not (re) opening it to govern the fridge temps.

thank you for any guidance from here.

Final verdict

Per Jakes recommendation above i ordered the the damper door/motor assembly. simple to install, wasn't even 15 mins from start to finish. temps in the fridge are where they should be now. thank you Jake! hope this serves as a successful lesson for someone else.
