I've been having issues with this dishwasher for weeks. Initially, it would run through about half the cycle and then stop. I replaced the main control board, but now the drain pump runs for multiple minutes, even when there is no water in the dishwasher. The drain DOES drain water if it's in the tub. It continues to run even when I open the door. It sounded like a problem with the pressure sensor, so I went ahead and replaced that. Even with a new pressure sensor, I'm having the same problem with the drain. If I try to run a cycle, the orange light turns off after a minute while the drain is running, and the drain continues to run for a few more minutes, again, even if the door is open.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated

This is a very unusual problem I've not seen as of yet, if you've already replaced the main control board underneath the dishwasher and pressure sensor, I don't know what else would cause this issue.

Hopefully another tech or member that's seen this problem and fixed it can shed some light on this issue.

Other than that, you can contact GE at 1-800-432-2737 to have a GE tech. come out to see what's going on.

When the pump continues to run after draining, there is still a small amount of water below the filters, but the water level is completely below where the water would enter the pressure sensor

Soooooo.... I decided to put the old pressure sensor back in. This time I did it while the power to the dishwasher was still on (I know, safety). When I removed the new pressure sensor, I got the PrS code on the LED display. I then installed the old sensor, and the code cleared. I started a cycle, and it immediately got past the drain cycle because it must have sensed the basin was empty (which it was). When I open the door mid cycle, the dishwasher pauses as expected, no attempt at draining.

Guess I'll run it a few times to see if it makes it all the way through the cycle each time

Ok, yes keep an eye on it for awhile and see how it does.

Ok seems like a similar issue to what I had before, I can now get past the drain cycle with the old pressure sensor and a new main control board. I think I know what's going on now though.

I read through some more forums and didn't realize I could take the black piece out of the white housing for the pressure sensor. Once I did that on the old and new, I took some pictures.

This is the old one. There's some black crusty stuff, almost like ash, around the outside. I'm attempting to clean that off and reinstall it. Can I get any more of this apart to clean inside?

This is the new one. It's a bit hard to see, but it looks like the sensor isn't aligned correctly within the black plastic casing, so I'm thinking this is a faulty piece. This is probably why the dishwasher is constantly trying to drain when I have this one installed

If the dishwasher still doesn't complete a cycle, I'm going to order another sensor from a different distributor to see if that fixes it

Not that I'm aware of.

I agree with you 100% that new pressure sensor looks defective.

Here's the pressure sensor for your model:

Let us know what you find. Make sure you disconnect power to the dishwasher first!

So I finally got the replacement part in, this one doesn't look to have the same defect. I installed the new pressure sensor, tried to run two different cycles, but they still end early. When I check the error code, it's always 56, which is a failure to drain according to sources online. The odd thing is the initial drain of the cycle always works, and doing a drain in service mode also always works. Could the control board I ordered also possibly be defective???

Another thing I noticed this time is that while draining, the pump makes a hard noise, almost like a bang, seems like it stops for a couple seconds, then will continue to drain. After it does this 3-5 times during the drain later in the cycle, the cycle ends and I get code 56. Maybe the actual drain pump is going bad?

That's very odd, look here about code 56:

Yes, it sure could be. That's why we always recommend getting parts from OEM parts dealers like AppliancePartsPros and RepairClinic

WD21X27998 is the machine control board underneath your dishwasher.

That's quite possible, or a foreign object could be in it causing that issue.

I'd disconnect power to the dishwasher, then remove the drain pump and look inside it for a foreign object.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary with the drain pump, but since it would only finish draining sometimes, seemed like the next logical choice to replace. I ordered the part above and installed it. I can't believe it, but I think I received  another defective part! The new pump sounds terrible and doesn't drain water at all! Going to ask them to replace this one as well

Ah nevermind, I had to move the valve so that an initial amount of water could get into where the pump is. It seems to be draining just fine now during test mode. However, I still can't complete a cycle. Whenever the drain cycle starts, it's always draining just fine, I can hear it running and see the water being drained into my sink disposal. It seems like it just can't pump as fast as it needs to to get all of the water out. This makes me think either the dishwasher is putting in too much water, which doesn't seem like the case, as it stops as expected when doing the water intake test, or there's a partial blockage somewhere along the drain line

or there's a partial blockage somewhere along the drain line
That's what I'm thinking as well.

What I usually do is get a bucket or container then put the drain hose in it and press cancel drain to see how fast the water is running out into the bucket or container, it should be a good strong flow out of the drain hose.

Also check inside the garbage disposal port where the drain hose connects to, I've seen that get clogged and prevent it from draining properly as well.

Sure as heck. There was something stuck in the drain. Whoever installed this dishwasher did some interesting things with the drain piping. It goes from plastic tubing from the dishwasher, into a short rubber tube, which connects to a copper pipe, then to the disposal. This piece was stuck in the junction between the plastic and rubber. It must have been just the right size where it could move around a bit, sometimes completely blocking water, sometimes letting some through. For anyone who stumbles onto this in the future, if you can see the water draining into your disposal, the water should be coming out closer to the size of a marker rather than a pencil, which is what I was seeing. Everything is working great now!

Excellent, glad you found the culprit that was clogging the drain.(y)

Thanks for the update!
