Greetings,
I am an applianceblog.com newbie here out of fridge repair desperation 😡.
I was scouring the internet for information on my GE French Door Fridge - 2008 Model. I ran across my model and your Staff Member: Rick Burton

assisted on the post and seemed quite knowledgeable about this exact model - I learned a lot from that thread which I used in my own repair. NOTE: I know the only thing about this fridge that is GE is the logo on the door - I have run across LG, Samsung, and a whole host of other brands' parts inside.

The problem started with a brief utility electrical service disruption that went off, on, off, on all within about 5 seconds. After that power disruption, the fridge front LED display began flashing 88 88, then other odd shapes. I found Rick Burton's great information on a very similar situation with my exact model (see attached blog reference). After that power disruption, the fridge and freezer continued to operate and hold the temp set-points that we set prior to the disruption. The problem was, we lost all control of the appliance.

About a month ago, the freezer stopped cooling and about two weeks later, the fridge also stopped cooling. I had figured the disruption had caused an electrical surge that damaged the main circuit board so I replaced it with a new one. I also replaced the capacitor and electrical control panel. I took the appliance completely apart, did a deep cleaning of the compressor, and all fans, cleaned fan panels, and reapplied foil tape so all air vent paths a clean and clear. I also replaced the temperature sensor in both the fridge and the freezer. I thought I had solved the problem, then restarted the device and similar flash, just different error codes. No ability to do the "Adjust Refridgerator" button and "Adjust Freezer" button simultaneously hold down for 20 seconds to do a reset - nothing will clear these error codes or allow me to control the appliance.

The fridge is in great shape, with no dents,/dings, all vent fans are working, and the compressor, sub-compressor, refrigerant, and evaporators all are running as they should. Both evaporators are getting cool to the touch. I am just missing something in the controls or electronics here. The other part I wanted to replace was the front Dispenser component (WR38X10434 - see attached) I just can't seem to find this part anywhere on the internet. Could that be the main problem? I have been pulling my hair out the past few weeks trying to get the thing going again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help!

-Troy

Hi Troy, yes Rick is very good with this model, unfortunately Rick has been out sick since Jan.12th 2022 with a serious illness, we are hoping and praying for a speedy recovery!

Yes, quite possibly.

You are correct, its NLA:

Is the compressor and fans running now but no cooling at all?

Jake

Finally getting back here, thanks for the response, Jake - my apologies for the delayed response. Also prayers for Rick, sorry to hear that news.

Yes, the compressor and fans are all working fine. There is cooling on the evaporator coil coming in, but it doesn't seem to flow through the entire evaporator. If I leave it on for an hour, frost will build up at the top of the evaporator.

Thanks! Rick will be glad to hear that when he returns.

Yes, that's a sealed system problem.
