We bought a GE Monogram ZTSX1DPSN1SS several months ago. It has steadily been making a buzzing sound during cool down. It was soft at first but has become progressively louder and more consistent over time.

Now it sounds like this every time we use it and have turned the temperature to off. I think it's some cooling fan, but not sure. Almost sounds like the fan is jammed or rubbing against something metal. Since it sounds like it's coming from the top/near front of the cavity, I fear it may be a fan related to cooling down the panel electronics. Which ironically, is what took out our last GE oven. :)

This is a tricky one to have a repair person diagnose, because first the oven has to be heated to high levels and then turned off to repeat it. And I doubt they'd want to open up a 400 F-degree oven.

I did see this thread, which talked about a GE Profile range with similar issues, yet the sound isn't quite the same.

Anyone experienced this or know the locations of all the cooling fans on this unit? Do we think it's the same fan as the Profile?

Yes, there has been issues with that cooling fan on these models.

Since its still under warranty, contact GE at 1-800-432-2737 to have a GE tech. come out to fix it for free.

I have an appointment for midweek.

I'm hoping they'll bring a fan with them, but I know that's unlikely. :)

Do you think I should preheat the oven before they get here so they can hear it, or is a video enough?

Also, does anyone know with this Monogram whether they can replace the fan without it pulling it out of the wall or can they get to it by removing the front panel? Removing ours is unfortunately a pain due to the short electrical cord. :(

Either is fine to do.

Usually it does need to be pulled out, do you have a electrical cord on it that plugs into the wall, or is direct wired in? You can also contact an electrician to add more wiring for better access.

it's direct wired. it sits below an Advantium oven in the stack and the cord runs up behind that. depending on the repair person/installer, they either decide to pull the Advantium out as well for access or fish the line through the conduit. neither makes them happy ;). and if they ask to have me help with the (heavy) Advantium if they are flying solo, that makes me cranky. :)

I asked the last installers if they could run an extra length of wire to avoid this in the future, but they didn't they think it would pass a code inspection.

Usually it work take a licensed electrician to run the extra wire, they know how to do it right, to make it pass code inspection.:)

i believe the last guys I had here for installation were licensed electricians too, so I was a bit puzzled when they balked. I figured they thought it was just more hassle than it was worth to them.

Yes, they only mostly just install, if you hire a reputable electrician in your area they will come out to give you a estimate.

Like when I moved from Arizona back to Oregon this year, I needed a WHOLE HOME SURGE PROTECTOR in my Oregon house, I called a google 5 star electrician in my area, and they came out last week and installed it, then the city inspector came out the next day to inspect their work, and it passed. It was a good chuck of money to get a WHOLE HOME SURGE PROTECTOR, but worth it!

FYI, tech came out and looked at it without pulling it out of the wall. Doesn't think it's the fan itself necessarily but something is definitely vibrating "sympathetically" when it's on. He said the fan appears to be working as it should. They rescheduled to come out with two guys next week to pull it all out and look at it.

FYI. So a couple guys came out and looked at it last week. After going through the "rigamarole" of getting it out, which requires removal of a large custom shelving unit made out of MDF to get to the junction box and fishing the wires down about 14-16" into the conduit behind the oven stack. At least they didn't have to fish the wires out completely. ;)

I should have taken some pictures but what they found was the cooling fan assembly part and another piece of metal flanging were vibrating. Bit of puzzlement to them why it was designed this way with no insulation for this potential issue. Everything was tightly screwed down. So they took some heavily heat resistant tape (they've run into these kinds of things before, these are official GE repair guys) and created their own solution to "calm down" the parts. Works great, vibration noise is gone and now the cooling fan is as silent as it can be. :)
