Hello,

I have the GE garage ready refrigerator and it actually has instructions to change the freezer to the coldest setting of 5 during cold winter months (yet says to lower the refrigerator temp to 2 so refrigerated items don't freeze). Just want to see if anyone actually does this or can explain the reasoning behind this recommendation. I'm thinking this is possibly something incorrectly printed that nobody caught or there's some logic to making the freezer colder yet the refrigerator warmer during winter months.

This is the model I currently own: https://www.geappliances.com/appliance/GE-21-9-Cu-Ft-Top-Freezer-Refrigerator-GTS22KYNRFS

I don't have any experience with that particular model but the control looks to monitor the fridge compartment temperature to run the compressor. If that compartment stayed too cold (like because of low ambient temperature) the compressor might not run enough to keep the freezer solid.

Setting the freezer control to maximum keeps most of the cold air in the freezer where needed most.
