Ge ZISB42DXA side by side refrigerator/freezer stops and starts randomly. It runs perfectly for a few days, stops cooling and then starts cooling on its own after 3 to 4 hours.

Hi,

Light(s) stay on during the thaw out?
Condensor coils been cleaned....recently....at all?
Two common trouble makers can stop the whole things from running but leave the lights on....

I'd clean the condnesor coils and change out both parts.

The grid has been vacuumed on a regular basis. Is that what you mean by the condenser coils?
I don't know about the light question. Could you explain that? I know that the lights always work. A fan runs even when the compressor does not and the refrigerator stops cooling.
I am a neophyte with this. To replace the Control fzr and the defrost timer, I assume that requires accessing the refrigerator from the back. Right?
Thanks for your help.

Condensor coil is the hot tubing.

When one of these random thaw outs occur....does everything shut down/off and just the light(s) only work?

A fan runs even when the compressor does not and the refrigerator stops cooling.

That is part of the diagnosing process...what exactly happens or works or doesn't when the problem is occuring.

Nope, front the front.
