Hi everyone!

I have a GE frontload washer (GFW850SPN0DG). Our 3-year-old washer has started having issues and not completing the wash cycle. When I start a wash, the drum fills with some water and starts to spin. After about 5 seconds, the drum stops spinning. It then sits there for a few seconds, and the starts to spin again only to stop again after about 5 seconds. It does this about 3 times before the entire wash cycle stops.

I was able to figure out how to get the unit into service mode, and I get an error code 3. Although I don't have the actual service manual for this model (if anyone does and would share I would appreciate it), I did find this blurb for error code 3 from a slightly earlier model....

"Physically check the washer for anything preventing motor movement. • Verify hall sensor is connected to the main harness. Put washer in service mode and run test 14 (Spin). If hall sensor is bad or disconnected, the basket will start to spin normally and then stop spinning after approximately 5 seconds. Ensure hall sensor is properly connected and positioned on the motor. If basket spins for approximately 15 seconds, the hall sensor is most likely NOT the cause. • Measure the resistance of each motor phase winding, If TCO is tripped, wait approximately 45 minutes for TCO to reset and make sure motor moves freely and that nothing is jamming it, replace motor if it does not. • Check the door lock using service mode spin test 14. • If unit doesn’t spin, replace inverter board or the main board."

I can confirm that the drum does spin, and from the description above it sounds like it could be the hall/speed sensor. But, since I don't have the actual service manual, not sure how to proceed. My attempts to find the manual have been unfruitful and I cannot even find that part on and of the "appliance part" websites. Any ideas?

I am having the same issue. After looking online it seems many people are having the same problem, even with older front-loader models. The fix is to replace the "inverter board". I feel they should recall the product with so many people having the same problem.

Hi , I have the same issue. May I ask you how did you figure out the cause of this problem is "Inverter board" ? Where did you buy the inverter board ? anyway to test if the inverter good or bad ?GE is out of stock now :-( Thanks in advance .

Had same / similar issue with GFW550. Wouldn't spin more than a few slow revolutions then timed out of wash phase. Two tests that failed in diagnostic mode were #14 (spin) and #26 (accelerated spin test). Replaced inverter board at approx cost of $140 (source was All Brand Appliance Parts in Pennsylvania). Works perfectly now. Agreed w above poster, seems like a common failure. Machine is 3 yrs old and used by just my wife and me. No abusive loads or heavy use.

Mine(same exact model) also fails for the inverter board. GE repair man wanted $580 bucks to replace it. No thank you, I know how to work on stuff. I ordered the part just waiting for it to come in. Just wondering if the new inverter board will last 3 years? Did GE fix the issue with the inverter board failing?
We shall find out, that's if the rest of the washer holds up.
Oh,order the part from searspartsdirect. 147 something then add taxes and shipping. 10 day delivery.

Why does it say to take the back cover off the washer to get to the inverter board. Says it's mounted on the inside front left of the cabinet. Why not take the front cover off to get to it. Anyone got a video on how to remove the inverter board on a GFW850SPN0DG?

Sorry folks had to repost.

Do Not Use searpartsdirect for any of your parts. They will give you the runaround on your order. Had to request my money back and order thru All Brands.
I'm also turning them in (searpartsdirect) to the FTC for deceptive trade practices.
They delayed me getting my washer fixed by not shipping my part as promised.
