I have a GE front loading washer, model number GFW850SPN1RS that keeps giving me an error code of 89.

I have done some trouble shooting to include various diagnostic tests from the field service mode, which isn't in the tech sheet (pub # 31-3000219 rev1) but I have found in other references to be included within a group of accelerometer faults. I have run test 14 (spin) as well as test 26 (accelerated spin test) to completion with no errors. Test 26 indicates that the machine is getting to 1100 rpm. I can clear the fault code using test 16 but when but when I attempt to start a cycle, I get the start cycle chime, a click or two, but it never starts a cycle.

In accordance with the tech sheet guidance to correct an accelerometer fault (despite passing test 14 and 26), I have replaced the accelerometer, but get the same errors.

I have had the machine for about 20 months so of course just outside of warranty. My concern is that if I get a tech out here, they will spend an hour or two, tell me it is a different issue (motherboard or something) I have to wait on parts and sink several hundred dollars into a machine only to find it isn't the real issue and I have to start over.

I'm hoping I'm not so special as to have hit the (un)lucky laundry lottery and that someone else has some insights as to how this might be remedied without having to run down a variety of 'could be' paths.

I can't locate the service manual for this model, its too new, and without that I can't assist you, sorry.

Hopefully another tech or member that's seen this problem and fixed it can shed some light on this issue.

Uses the same tech sheet posted here! https://www.applianceblog.com/mainf...ycle-how-to-enter-the-diagnostics-mode.86883/
From the service manual:NOTE: It’s important to note that fault codes should only be used to help identify those components which require testing. Never replace a part based solely on a fault code. The control can generate a false fault if the right conditions exist. Use the code only as a reference and always check the component before replacing.

I have GE tech arriving tomorrow. I'll keep you posted on what I learn.
Sounds good.:)

Thanks bigbuck for letting us know that.(y)

The GE tech arrived yesterday and ran diagnostics. He also ensured that firmware was fully up-to-date. Based on his more advanced testing (i.e. beyond field service mode) it appears that there is a problem with the main board. Fortunately the part is in stock and was able to be ordered. Unfortunately, it won't arrive until next week and then the next availability on the schedule is late next week.

More to follow.....

Thanks for letting us know.:)

Here's the main control board for your model, in case others need it too: WH22X35517

Let us know how it goes after the GE tech replaces it, if you could please. Thanks!

As predicted the main board arrived at the house about a week ago and a tech, not the same one from the previous visit, was able to make it out today. He again ran a few quick diagnostics and concluded it was the main board. 15 minutes or so later, it was swapped out and we were back in business.

It is a bit frustrating that it failed in about 2yrs but the repair was still less than a new machine and it is a very nice machine, when it works. The replacement board is warrantied for 5 yrs with 90 days on the labor. Ideally neither of those will matter and this will last far longer than that but, there is something to be said for peace of mind. Now we have some laundry to catch up on :).

Thanks to everyone on the forum for their help and insights.

Glad to hear the new main control board fixed it.(y)

Thanks for the update!
