GSRE5600K2WW top-loading GE washer won't spin during a wash nor in service field mode

I just replaced the mode shifter which was was leaking (old seals). The washer has not spun for a while, but the motor LED use to indicate a communication error with the mode shifter (4 blinks). The error went away after replacement, and the motor LED now flashes indicates normal/standby (1s on/1s off).

In field service mode, all tests are successful (including fast/slow agitation), except for the spin test which does nothing. During the spin test, the motor LED still flashes "normally" (1s on/1s off).
Needless to say, the washer also won't spin during normal washing duties, resulting in sopping wet clothes and real frustration !

I recon this might be a canadian model, since I live in Québec and the washer was bought here.

Hello all, I would appreciate some guidance since my problem is still ongoing.

I have checked the following :
  • Thes water pressure/level gauge has continuity and its hose is not clogged.
  • The lid switch has continuity.
  • The water pump seems OK but I have some doubt, as water does not completely drain... There is some residual water in the lowest part of the plastic tub, below the stainless steel tub and directly above the draining hose connected from tub to pump.
  • The motor doesn't flash any error code.
  • Field service mode gives no error code, and all tests are performed successfully except for the spin test (which is my issue).
Thank you in advance,
Antoine

Hi Antoine, I'm not able to locate the tech. data sheet or service manual for this model to assist you. All machines come with one, look in your console for it.

Hello Jake, thank you for taking some time to help me.

I'm joining the data sheet included in the console, let me know if it can be of any help or if some other detail might be useful.

Its hard to read it out, the print is too dim and the words are blurry. Sorry Antoine, I'm not going to be able to help you on this one.

Hopefully another tech or member that's seen this problem and fixed it can shed some light on this issue.

I understand, sorry for the poor image quality.

If anybody could help me any further, I think the next step is figuring out if the motor's components are still able to achieve spin speed. However, I would not know how to test this.

I might visually inspect the motor this week, but, alas, my knowledge in circuitry is very limited and the only components I would be able to diagnose as bad and change are capacitors. However, I think it is still worth a shot.

Jake, FYI.

After some more snooping I found out that my machine is nearly identical to those presented in this owner's manual that you posted in another thread. I was therefore able to test the motor/invertor as shown on page 40. The correct voltages show up when measuring on the motor's C4 pin while the machine is in field service mode spin, which tells me the control board is OK. I was pretty sure the lid switch was not faulty (because the agitate function works), but I still tested it for good measure and it was also OK.

I don't think my issue is with the water pressure switch either for two reasons:
1. I tried the blowing trick to initiate a spin a couple of times, unsuccessfully.
2. I checked it's resistance and it was normal.
However, there appears to be some gunk build-up in the air-dome, and there there is water in the bottom portion (under the red arrow; see attached picture). I tried flushing it out by blowing some water through the hose, and I also tried this user's vinegar trick, but to no avail. Machine still won't spin.
Could this small gunky water residue in the bottom of the air-dome somehow refrain the machine from spinning ?

If not, since every other function except spinning (agitate, drain, fill) works as intended, and since the motor's LED indicates no error, it would mean a bad inverter and I'd have to replace the whole assembly...

Did you blow into the water level switch itself and did you hear a click sound in that switch when you did that?

No, not that I'm aware of.

I agree.

Firstly, thanks a bunch for your answer !

Did you blow into the water level switch itself and did you hear a click sound in that switch when you did that?
Yes. I removed the tube from the air-dome and blew through it multiple times (which always resulted in a clicking sound).

About the motor-invertor, my assembly number (175D5106G057) does not appear anywhere on the product page, so i'm kinda worried !

Another behaviour which I found intriguing is when the washer is in field service spin mode, the correct voltages are sent to the motor's connector, but the motor's LED flashes as idle (1s on/1 s off) instead of flashing as receiving an instruction. (0.5s on/0.5s off). This would also point to a bad motor-invertor assembly in my opinion.

I agree 100%.

They don't go by assembly numbers when you order parts, just the manufacturer part numbers.
