I recently replaced the drive shaft assembly, pump, tub seal and drive motor in my old washer. But now, it just started to splash water over top and its pooling on floor during agitation. I can't figure out why, and it seems I can only do small water level loads at this point. When I took the metal drum out, I can hear water shloshing around inside..is this normal? Any fix for this?

Sounds like you possibly got a defective Mode Shifter & Shaft Assembly.

Shawn has a good webpage on this model here: HydroWave GE Washer Repair Guide

Then go halfway down that page and you will see How To Check the Shifter Coil(Sometimes called mode sifter or shaft and tube)

--->When the coil fails it can no longer engage the gears, therefore the gears stay disengaged all the time. This will cause the spin basket to turn with the agitator even during the wash cycle.

So if that's happening the spin basket is spinning with the agitator and causing water to splash out on all water levels, except small water level, while its agitating in the wash cycle.

Here's the Mode Shifter & Shaft Assembly for your model:

That's normal, its balancing fluid you hear in it.

Thank you. I purchased the shaft assembly brand new in box. But at one point, the tub nut came loose, drum was knocking into the lid seal an shredded it. I didn't have a torque wrench when assembling my unit after putting in the shaft assembly. Wondering if that caused the problem. I just replaced the lid seal and ordered a new balance ring to see if that help. Then I will buy a new shaft and start over. I love this machine and don't want to buy a new one. But this is costing me more than a new one :) I prefer units from pre-Chinese ownership.

Yes, that sounds like what might have happened.

Yes, let us know how it goes.

Well, I just replaced the mode shifter assembly again, thinking I got a bad one. Also put a new balance ring on. Same thing happening...water splashing over top, not agitating, just spinning. What else can I do? I took off the front panel and watched it splash over the top. Everything is new in this unit...pump, drive motor, mode shifter...am I missing something? And the red light on motor is doing a steady slow flashing, if that means anything.

That's very odd, I really don't know what's causing it, I've not run into this problem before on my local customers.

Hopefully another tech or member that's run into this problem can shed some light on this issue. Other than you can Contact GE at 1-800-432-2737 to come out and see why this is happening.

I was trying to avoid that..I did call a local repairman, he charged me $90 to tell me I needed new drive motor, and it would cost $400. So I bought one and installed myself. That wasn't the problem :( Was hoping there was another fix I could try. I may try replacing timer and lid switch now....
