GU2300XTVT0 water feed tube rubber flap

I took things apart to clean the filter, and cleaned the water feed tube while I had it out. There's a part halfway up the feed tube with two round openings, and each opening has a little round rubber flap. One of the flaps came off. It looks like it broke off at the hinge.

What does that flap do, and is essential?

I did some quick research on replacement parts, and it looks like I'd need to buy the whole water feed tube (WP8559849), which costs about $50.

I can post a picture of the little piece I'm talking about if that would help.

Oh, I think I see the purpose of the flap. The upper rack has two positions, and the flap closes off whichever hole the upper wash arm isn't using.

As a temporary measure, can I just keep the upper rack in the position that will use the "flapless" hole?

That one just tucks/slides in place on the console.
