• ** REMEMBER! **The microwave can still shock you even unplugged!!

ALWAYS discharge the high-voltage capacitor first if you even think your hands will come close to any HIGH VOLTAGE components.

Jeff mentions this: Anything in the high voltage ( magnetron, capacitor, diode, wires to and from ):
...Use a metal ( not the shiny chrome type ) screw driver with a insulated handle to short across ( touch both at the same time ) the terminals of the high voltage capacitor to discharge it.

Microwave completely dead, power source and 2 20 A fuses are fine. Suspect thermal cutout and magnetron fried. What do I do now?

Hi,

I found SMH9187B/XAA

There are thermostats on the base, magnetron and top of the cooking cavity....

Pull the unit down, remove outer cabinet to access.

Thanks Jeff,
Discovered reason for burnout of mv was repeated running without food in oven.(ostensibly being used as a timer). My guess is possible thermostat fried or next magnetron itself cooked! Would you agree?

Check the thermostats for sure, esp the oven over heat thermostat at the top.

With any luck the thermostats worked before damaging the mag.

Capacitor reads infinity and shows zero charge rate. Diode reads infinity in both directions. Oven thermostat reads open so these three items need replacement. My concern is in checking magnetron. Instructions say to be sure seal in properly seated. Not sure where and what this is. Also having some difficulty removing leads from magnetron terminal jack. Would like some advice re these issues before ordering parts.

Using a needle meter or a digital? Most meters ( unless a very expensive one ) will not be able to check the diode anyways.

Join the 2 wires together ( for testing only ) and recheck the unit.

Unless the mag was removed, the seal will be in place. Brass coloured part is the seal... Magnetron-6324W1A001H-01359863.jpg

Eureka!! It works! All it needed was the $2.90 oven thermostat. Probably saved myself 297.10.
Thanks a million for your help Jeff. Will keep this blog repair site on my favorites list and will send a donation for its upkeep.

Ciao! Itchy8
