This thing should get a Congressional Medal of Honor. Got it when we lived in South Dakota. Moved four times over the 45 years since we got it in the mid 70's. It's been in the basement once and most of the time in the garage in Minnesota and Wisconsin where it gets blazing hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Never done anything but defrost it and it works like a champ with the food around 0º all year round. Haven't even put in a new start capacitor.
Now that I'm replacing that capacitor for my refrigerator that isn't even 20 years old (had to replace the compressor on this Maytag in the first five years....fortuately I had an extended warranty), I thought I ought to give the freezer a new start capacitor since the old one is well over 40 years old (and the thing still runs!! Of course it isn't as energy efficient as the wonderful new ones, but how energy efficient is it to have to replace everything that relies on a compressor (refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and AC units) every ten years and put the old ones in a landfill? All of that necessitated because of efficiency ratings necessitated by the environmental movement so the compressors are built so light they won't last much beyond the warranty period. I was told by the tech who replace the compressor on our Maytag refrigerator that died just under 5 years old tha the manufacturers put in this light junk and then just pray that it makes it past the warranty. Look at the warranty on most new dehumidifiers next time you go to Home Depot, most are around a year or two.
That's great environmental efficiency isn't it!!!!!!!

THEY DO NOT MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TO!!
