This GE side by side bought around 2002-2003 has been the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. I will never own another GE appliance. I have had issues with defrost heaters, thermostats, thermistors, etc. etc. almost every year I have owned it.

This unit even had a defect with a cold solder joint on the compressor relay on the mother board. My brother had a similar model and had the EXACT same issue. Should have been recalled for that one.

I have the double defrost heater element in the freezer now which was redesigned because of all the heating element issues. It is fine. About 3-4 months ago I had to replace the defrost thermostat because it had split open. For the last 2 months, about every 7-10 days, the freezer will start to thaw out. We have to take the ice bin out because it is leaking all over the place, and then after a couple hours everything returns to normal again and the fridge functions OK for another week and a half or so.

It is my understanding there is no defrost timer on this unit.
