I have a Jenn Air Gas Range (JDS9860BDS) that has a grill insert on the left side. I want to replace this as we never use it and they sell a two burner cartridge. I purchased a cartridge (JGA8100ADB) and removed the grill. The cartridge fits perfectly and everything lines up light it should. When I try to light the burner BOTH knobs (rear and front) activate the ignition lighter in the rear only. No flame lights but I can smell gas.

Is there a setting on the stove that needs to be adjusted?

I don't know what that says but here's how it works; When ever one of the ignition switches is closed , a circuit is established to all the igniters and all igniters spark. Only the gas valve that is open will ignite. If one of the igniters doesn't spark, switch it with a known working igniter. If the igniter works replace the failed igniter. If the good igniter doesn't work, replace the spark module. Since the cartridge is new I would assume the igniters are good. Make sure it's wired correctly.

Just to clarify - when I turn either of the knobs on the stove (on the left side) they both activate the ignitor to the rear burner. The one labeled 'front' doesnt activate the front burner like it should.

I am assuming that this is a wiring issue within the cartridge but I have no idea.

I bought this unit used but it was sold as 'working'.

That's exactly what it sound like. Was there two spark igniters in the grill?

You might just have a bad ignitor. Switch the igniters around and see if just the front works.

After some further tinkering here an update:

The rear burner works fine. It sparks and lights like it should.

The front burner won't spark but does give off gas (can be lit with a match). When I turn the 'front' control knob the rear burner sparks but gas comes from the front burner. It must be a wiring issue. Are these complicated to work with? I haven't cracked open the case yet to see what the insides look like.

I cracked it open. The wire to the front burner broke at the clasp that attaches to the burner. Can these just be soldiered or do I just buy a new unit. Also, I looked for the replacement part and can't find it (this is an older stove). Are these universal controls?

The picture below is not the broken end. It snapped at the end that looks like a clasp (I know my jargon is completely off).
