Hi! I just got a used Jenn-Air JER8785QAF maybe a month or two ago. It's been wonderful. I'd been baking with it (did all of thanksgiving), cooking, etc. It's been through pretty heavy use (holidays!) and has been baking cookies all week. Yesterday, during a preheat for a batch of cookies, it just shut itself off. I didn't think much of it. But today, for my last batch (a bread that takes at least an hour), it stopped multiple times during preheat, and so far 2 times while baking (it is baking as I type). I've also noticed a little "clicking" while it's baking.

As someone who bakes a lot and often on the side, I need a good oven. I know it is old, but I also know it works great when it works right.

What do you think is the problem here and can it be fixed?

I've read something with the electronic control panel or fan with other models but am not sure. It is vey quiet, so it could be there is no fan running to keep the electronics cool. But thoughts? And directsion towards possible parts? Should I get a tech out?

What exactly do you mean by "stopped"? The control reset? The heating just ceased?

Repeatedly or just a single time when the element is cycling on and off to maintain temperature?

Dan O.
By “stopped” I mean it canceled the bake/preheat—the heating ceased, and the display went back to the clock as it appears when not in use. That may be what you’re calling a reset.

And repeatedly for the clicking. Which yes, probably to maintain heat and I only noticed now. I had to took look up glass range tops when I got it to understand why the coils would cycle on and off. I’ve only used gas ovens up to this point.

the display went back to the clock as it appears when not in use.

Does it lose all lights when it resets?

If power to the control was interrupted, that could be caused by a loose wiring connection. If it just lost its programming but never actually blanked out, an internal fault in the electronic control is the likely the cause in which case the electronic control would likely need to be replaced to correct it.

I think it must’ve lost its programming only because the clock remained on. Is it difficult to repair and would I be able to find the part?

The part is discontinued but there are several repair services for it (see the following link). What would have to be done is the control removed from your range and then sent away to be repaired and then reinstallled when returned.

Electronic Control rebuild services

I have not serviced that model but I found a service manual for it that might describe what is required to replace the control.

Thanks for all the information. I may take a chance on it. It's so strange, it worked fine for quite awhile and even just tonight it preheated no problem. I'd just rather get ahead of it. Otherwise sending it out for repair is definitely viable.
