My GE oven smells like gas when on the preheat cycle. I figured - hell I'll replace the igniter again. Sure enough, I replaced the igniter and it still smells like gas when on the pre-heat cycle! Otherwise, the oven works perfectly. Not sure what to do...help!

No gas smells when the oven is off too -- only happens on pre-heat

Oven is GE JGB281SER5SS

It sounds like the burner might be taking too long to ignite.

Time how long it takes for the burner to ignite into flame after the oven is initially turned on.

That's very good. Slow ignition (1.5 - 2 minutes) can cause cause gas odours but that apparently isn't happening.

Maybe check that the flame on the burner is even all the way around.

Just by chance, you haven't painted or used any strong cleaners near the range recently? Fumes when burned in an open flame can produce noxious odours.

Thanks for your help Dan --

No new paint nor strong cleaners lately

I can check the flame -- or certainly clean it -- what's the best way to clean the pipe?

Any other options?

I should note -- there's no odor if I leave the oven door open upon lighting -- I think it happens when the oven door is closed

1. For now just look and make sure the flame is uniform around the burner.

2. Look at the flame itself and compare it to the descriptions at this link. Maybe the flame is not burning correctly?

LINK > Gas Flame Characteristics

3. Look for signs of soot on the flame spreader above the burner.
