Hello - 6 year old KDTE104ESS1 dishwasher.

Start
Fills with water
Then I hear a clicking sound a couple of times and then nothing happens
Later I heard the soap dispenser open and soap fell out
Drains without a problem
At no time do I hear any water spray - the recirculation pump never engaged

Ran diagnostic and right away it gave me a code 7-1 then later a code 5-1.
Filled with water and went through the full 20 min and then drained but recirculation pump never turned on.

While the codes are for the heating element 7-1 and the door latch 5-1 it seems weird that those things would both fail at the same time.

I suspect maybe the recirculation pump has failed and that is the clicking and why I'm getting two different codes but I know nothing aside from what I've read here.

Thank you for any help/advice. I'm handy and can replace any parts. However if we get into $300-400 in parts I may opt for a $600 whirlpool as I've never liked this Kitchenaid much :)

Yes, the circulation pump(wash motor) is usually the cause of this problem, many members here have reported the same. In fact I had 2 do this same thing in Sept. 2018 in Parker, Arizona, and the new wash motor fixed them both.:)

Look at post #7 here: FIXED 665.13472N411 What to check on why it only washes about 5% of the cycle.

To verify that, you can check to see if your getting 120 volts to the wash motor when it should be in the wash cycle. His Kenmore 665 made by Whirlpool, and uses the exact same wash motor yours does.

Take the wire connector off the wash motor and use your multimeter to see if yours is getting 120 volts when it should be washing, if so and it's not running order the wash motor below.

Here is the wash motor assembly for your model:

Here's the video:

Or, you can order the complete assembly which comes with the wash motor already installed for you along with a new diverter motor too that's less expensive:
PUMP&MOTOR WPW10605057

The error code 7-1 is because the water is not getting hot, because the wash motor is not running, thus not spraying water over the heating element.

The error code 5-1 is probably a old error code, because it says this--->Door was not latched within 4 seconds of pressing the Start/Resume key.

Let us know what you find.

Ok I ordered the whole thing all assembled with overnight delivery. So tomorrow night I guess I get to try installing it. I'll post up if it fixes the issue. Thank you!

I have the KichenAid dishwasher model #: KDTM354DSS4. Is this same circulation pump compatible to my dishwasher or is it a different pump? Thank you for your help.

Got it installed - glad I opted to just do the full combo. Not too bad - toughest part was getting the new unit into place so it sealed and you could flip the locks in place.

Immediately started working correctly again. We have hard water here so perhaps that is what killed it after just 6 years.

Sad part of the operation is that when I pushed it back in somehow a plastic part underneath had left a indentation scratch on the wood floor. So while my dishwasher now works perfectly I'll forever be reminded of the repair when I see the 12" indentation line in my floor :(

But the dishes are clean.

Thank you so much for the help.
