My Kitchenaid dishwasher works but it is making noise. It used to be so quiet I wondered if it was even on. Now, it periodically makes a loud humming noise. I don't want to purchase a new pump and motor assembly if I'm not sure if that's the actual problem. It could also be the drain pump, the circulation pump, the drain impeller or the wash impeller. How can determine which one it is?

A start would be to try to determine where the sound is coming from on the dishwasher and/or what exact function of the cycle is or is suppose to be occurring at the time of the strange sounds.

I pulled it out from under the counter and could not determine where it was coming from. It starts a few seconds after I start it up. It lasts for a few seconds, coming on and off and then periodically returns during the wash. I don't think it's the spray pump because I hear it spray and it's not making the sound when spraying. Also, the dishes are clean, so no loss in pressure. Any other suggestions or thoughts?

A dishwasher usually starts with a drain, then it fills and then the wash motor starts circulating the water. It may drain again during the cycle and fill again. If it occurs at the very start of the cycle, the sound may be coming from the drain pump.

Foreign material may have gotten into the pump and/or it might be worn internally.
