FIXED KDTM384ESS Dishwasher 1/4" of slime

This post has helped me troubleshoot my own dw build-up problem. My 2019 KitchenAid Model # KDTM404EBL3 has been a great dishwasher overall. I use Cascade Complete tabs and Cascade Rinse Aid.

In late 2021 I switched from using the ProWash cycle to Normal because I wanted to use less water (for efficiency/cost savings) and the user manual said Normal used less water than ProWash. Earlier this year I started seeing the build-up on the tracks, racks, and other tub elements. Dish ware came out clean and there was no odor but the gunk left behind in an otherwise spotless tub was perplexing. Initially thought it was due to not pre-rinsing our dishes - we are a scrap the plates only household - but rinsing dishes made no difference.

I tried my usual go-to cleaning aid, running empty loads of Lemi-Shine, even tried running a cup of vinegar, with only minimal improvement. Purchased Affresh tabs this summer to see if that would help, but only a toothbrush and elbow grease could fully remove the gunk. I am now back to using the ProWash settings, sometimes alternating with Express wash for some loads with good results after a just a few weeks. Will continue to monitor to see if using cycles with more water prevent this build-up.

I guess there can be such a thing as too much efficiency that likely hasn't been fully considered by engineers/designers of these HE appliances. Hats off to @dishgate for determining the possible root cause of not enough water-to-detergent.

GE used to recommend using citric acid periodically in their d/w's to clean them out. GE's recently started substituting the acid with one of the Affress-type cleaners but plain citric acid is still available at many drug stores if you wanted to try it.

JFYI

Thanks Dan. The Lemi-Shine product is citric acid. I'd started using that product years ago in my old Whirlpool dishwasher with success; originally using it as a detergent aid when they removed phosphates from detergents. It certainly helps boost cleaning power especially with hard water, like we had until recently. I like the Affresh product so far, but keep a bottle of Lemi-Shine on hand at all times. Pity neither of them solved our sludgy build-up problem on these KitchenAid machines. Hate needing to use cycles with more water, but that appears to be the obvious work-around for this situation.

I was thinking about this yesterday. Are you aware of how saltwater aquarium protein skimmers work? A process called "fractionation"? ...

@dishgate et al, perhaps I can help you restore your ability to use all features/cleaning modes beyond Express Wash (which includes a rinse cycle between pre-wash and wash the other modes skip).

I noticed my circulating pump was circulating water and air because not enough water was entering the tub. I fixed this, and my machine is quieter and cleans far better!

If you gently remove the metal screen to the water inlet valve (mine bent slightly during removal, but I was able to bend it back and put it back in), you'll notice a rubber washer covering the inlet gaps:

I no longer have to pre-rinse or pre-scrape certain foods any more.

The rubber washer at the inlet valve (behind the metal screen) restricted the amount of water entering the tub. This starved my circulating pump of water during runtime, and the machine couldn't clean as well (it was pumping air when starved). Addressing this fixed it so my pump was no longer starved of water (and dishes got the maximum amount of water).
