Hello,

I was wondering if I could get some help in getting started diagnosing the issue with my dishwasher, it is barely over a year old and it's the first time I've had any issues with it.
When starting the dishwasher some water gets pumped into it and I can hear a humming noise it just does into a loop of humming and stopping but never gets to the point of actually spraying water. At some point it just stops and beeps and flashes what I believe is the error code. It seems to flash 9 times followed by a pause and a single flash. I've also attached a video.

Link to Video

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you

Hi, Another person had this same error code 9-1 on your same model:
You can do what I mentioned in that thread too.

Sorry for the delayed response! only had time to check it out today.

I've taken it apart but unfortunately, I'm not sure what I am supposed to look out for, everything seems to normal from what I see. The only other detail that I can recall was that there was also a faint melting/burning odor as well when trying to run it.

Thank You

Upon reflection, I feel like there is an issue with water that won't fill up the dishwasher? I've thrown a couple cups of water in the dishwasher and hit the drain button and it was able to empty it out without any issues but when I try to start a cycle it doesn't feel like any water is flowing through the system and I feel circulation as well when touching the water hose from the sink to the dishwasher.

Ok, so when you first start a cycle, do you hear it filling with water? If you open the door do you see water in the tub? Any sounds after that like its trying to start the wash motor to start washing?

Here's another thread about the filter and wash motor having issues:

Ok, Did you check the float switch?

Here's your service manual: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16JlVUq65LUiZdSpsIJJqAnEAS7sDAYHL/view?usp=sharing Look on page 41, then page 45 tells how to check the float switch(aka Overfill Switch Circuit).

Test Procedure
1. Verify water supply is turned on and supply line is adequate.
Check for water siphoning out of the dishwasher (drain loop or improper drain connection). Check for debris in water line or fill valve inlet screen. Check for proper float switch operation. Repair as necessary.

Here's the float switch for your model: W11545764

Here's the video of where its located:

Thanks, Jake,

I wasn't a 100% sure what I needed to check but I can confirm that the water supply is flowing correctly from the sink side and there is no leak anywhere or on the pan. I've removed the float switch and use a multimeter to check it and there is continuity until I manually press on the styrofoam. To my eyes there doesn't seem to be any debris on the water inlet.

Ok, I don't know what else to suggest, something strange is going on that I've not run into on this model before.

Its best at this point to Contact KitchenAid Canada at 1 (800) 807 6777 to come out to see what's going on.

Thanks a lot Jake,

I suppose I'll try to put it in diag mode and see if anything changed, last time I ran it the 9-1 was gone and 8-4 flash replaced it.

8-4 is a water inlet valve problem.

Did you take off the water supply line to the dishwasher water inlet valve and check to make sure you had good water pressure to the dishwasher?

I always turn the water supply line off underneath the customers sink, then remove the water supply line to the water inlet valve, then get a bucket or container to catch water in, then put the water supply line in the bucket and turn the water supply on and see how fast its going into the bucket, it should have a very strong stream of water pressure into the bucket.

Also check the screen on the water inlet valve to make sure its not clogged up either.

Here's the water inlet valve for your model:

Small update, I think the 8-4 problem was me being silly and forgetting to plug the float switch back.

I've just ran a diagnostics test and it still gave me the 9-1 error, however if I run it again and skip to test 2 the dishwasher actually does start filling the tub properly but I believe that when it should be starting test3 and start washing I just hear a continuous hum for a long time before it just gives up and stops and seems to cancel the diagnostics all together as it thew no error code and all lights shut off. I might try and open up the wash motor to look at it.

I've disconnected the wire from the motor and then ran a normal cycle and water comes in just fine as well. I've measured the voltage coming out of the plug after the water stopped filing and it seems to bring in 120V just fine. I've noticed before pulling the plug that the motor and it's surroundings were pretty hot I could even feel it on the wire, is that normal?

Check the filter inside that pump chamber, that could be broken and not allowing the motor to run, here's the filter part number: W11643383

Here's the dishwasher wash(circulation) motor for your model, which comes with the new filter already installed for you:
Pump Assembly W11414076

Its in-stock currently here: Base-Pump W11414076

The service manual I posted the link to above shows you how to access those parts.

Disconnect power to your dishwasher. Then you will need to remove the dishwasher from underneath your cabinet to access those parts.

Yes, good find, that broken filter is the culprit.
