HI everyone!
Tempted to get a spare fridge but it wouldn't be plugged in; just kept in the garage in case needed. But I'm wondering if the sealed system would be hurt that way. Does it need to be actively circulating and pumping, etc. Or would I be risking a leak sometime later by just keeping the refrigerator unplugged all the time.

Maybe somebody could add an example of the longest they've let a fridge remain unplugged and successfully started it up and ran it again without issue.

THANKS!
SK

p.s. This refrigerator in particular is already 20 years old, so I don't know if that would factor
It is a solid Whirlpool-built Kenmore (not the LG I've heard so much about)

Most refrigerators will survive if not in an overly humid environment.

Chest freezers and both refrigerator and freezers models with their condenser built into the cabinet (ie. no external condenser with fan by the compressor) might not. On those the condenser that is welded to the inside of the cabinet is made of steel tubing which could be subject to rusting when not running for long periods, leading to a possible refrigerant leak ($$$+).

But I thought all condenser coils were made of steel

The condenser coils under or behind the fridge are painted and not usually subjected to direct moisture. When the condenser tubing is welded inside the cabinet it isn't coated and could be subject to condensation when not warmed from operation, leading to rusting. There is often a condenser line around the front perimeter of the cabinet used with either type of condenser but it is far more limited in area. It still might be affected but far less likely IMO.

A totally unused appliance shouldn't be subject to either condition however if left unused in a high humidity environment (like the tropics or seaside) could affect other connecting tubing regardless of condenser design.
