Two weeks ago we noticed that our ice maker was not producing much ice (this is in the top door). I ran all the diagnostics on it and everything passed. Then I noticed that the ice cream in the bottom freezer was not completely frozen and realized we had a bigger problem than a busted ice maker. We admittedly have not checked the temperature of the refrigerator, but it is not obviously warm. Husband checked the freezer evaporator coil this morning and it is so frozen that the insulation will not come off and there is ice coming out from under the insulation (picture attached). He also looked at the control board to see the part number and checked the version it was running (picture of the control board is attached and version is 7.0 per the diagnostic test).

We are defrosting the freezer evaporation coil now (will try to get a picture when insulation is off) and once that is done we will plug it back in (we completed diagnostic test 89 and it stayed on for the 5 minutes). Any chance that the simple defrost will work, or does it sound like we have a bigger problem? What should our next steps be? This is super disappointing considering the refrigerator is only 2 years old. Thanks!

Hi, you're missing the last 2 digits in your model number, read it from the model number tag, which is located inside the refrigerator section on the upper walls or celing.

Here's the results I get:
KRFC704FPS00
KRFC704FPS01
KRFC704FPS03
KRFC704FPS04

As of this morning after the freezer evap coil defrost, the ice maker is making ice and the freezer is holding at -3. The refrigerator is at 47 though. Going to take a look at the refrigerator evap coil today. We live in a very humid climate. Any chance defrosting these every few years will be the fix, or is it likely that the control board or something else with the defrost function is bad?

Thanks Jane!

I'm attaching your tech. data sheet below.

Service Test - 89 Run FC Defrost Heater
--->When entering this service test, defrost heater turns on and stays on for 5 minutes or until the evaporator thermistor goes above 60°F.
--->“ON” will be displayed while the operation is executed.

So if the defrost heater came on in Service Test 89 that means your evaporator thermistor and defrost heater are working fine, that only leaves the control board as the culprit to this problem.

Here's the control board for your model: W10807590
