I have a kitchenaid - KRSC503ESS. The back lower panel is iced up and my fridge is starting to warm. The freezer is cold, Ice cream is hard. There is ice, etc... My fridge is about 45 deg now. I took everything out and took off the panel. The coils are frozen. I didn't hear the fan running many times when I checked. It sounded like it did come on one time.
- Do I need to replace the fan and how do I get the Styrofoam casing out of the refrigerator.
- Also, I saw online some people wrote that repairman replaced both the fan and the thermistor. Should both be replaced at the same time Where is the thermistor located....

I am a general contractor and possess the ability to fix many things given some guidance.
Would really appreciate some assistance. It's so frustrating that it's only 2 years old.

Also is there a way to turn off just the refrigerator side and leave on the freezer while doing the deicing and replacement...

Hi,

Let's first see if your getting power to the refrigerator evaporator fan motor, you can use your multimeter and take the volt readings from the main control board, which is located in the back of your refrigerator after you pull it out from the wall you will see a access panel that covers it, just remove that access panel then you will see it.

On the main control board, At the wire harness connector labeled P14 pin 3(blue wire) and pin 4(gray) you should be getting 14 volts DC

If your getting 14 volts DC at those pins and the fan in the refrigerator section is NOT running, then its bad.

Looks like the fan is good and running. It appears to be a defrost component issue....

Ok, the evaporator coil in the refrigerator section does not have a defrost heater, it defrosts per that fan motor.

#4 is your evaporator fan motor thermistor in refrigerator section. That could be bad and causing that fan motor not to run when it should be running.

You'll need to ohm test that thermistor.

Here's that thermistor for your model:

To test it, unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet first, then you ohm it with a multimeter, you put the thermistor in cup of ice water for 5 minutes and it should read about 8.7 K ohms.
