The ice maker my refrigerator, Model KRFC704FPS00, has stopped making ice. No water is making it to the ice tray. As the ice maker was going south on me the little bit of ice it was making was slowly melting in the ice bin. The ice maker on my refrigerator is in the door. Is there a thermostat for the ice maker? I can still pour a glass of water so the water inlet valve is still working.

I looked at the water inlet valve and there is only one water line in and one going out to it does not appear to be a two valve setup. Also, the auger still works so the problem is not a burnt out motor. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? Is there another valve that feeds the ice maker? One more thing, I did order a new ice maker and installed it but it didn't fix the problem. I have the freezer set at -6 degrees.

Hi Jay,

This is a brand new style ice maker I have not seen as of yet, nor do I have any tech. data information on it, I can ask bigbuck if he has any tech data information on it.

Here's the ice maker for this model: W10908391

There should be a tech. data sheet underneath the right side door hinge cover, see if you can find it.

I think this is the same as yours. Switch numbers:
W10337911 Switch Numbers.jpg

To Enter Service Diagnostics Mode:
NOTE: Refrigerator must not be in lockout mode prior to entering Service Diagnostic mode.
1. Press SW1 and SW2 simultaneously for 3 seconds.
2. Release both buttons when you hear the CHIME indicator. The display will show “01” to indicate the control is in Step 1 of the diagnostics routine.
Each step must be manually advanced.
Press SW5 to move to the next step in the sequence.
Press SW4 to back up in the sequence to the previous step.

Service Test - 56: Ice Maker Error Codes
Displays active ice maker error codes on the UI display.
E0 = No errors. Functioning ice maker.
E1 = No cooling. Ice maker timed out. Ice compartment unable to reach desired temperatures. Possible cooling or fan issue.
E2 = Motor lost position. Ice maker did not find home during harvest and exceeded maximum attempts. NOTE: Check for obstructions in ice maker. If none found, verify operation of the ice maker with Service Test 57.
E3 = Heater time-out, Ice mold heater was on longer than maximum allowable time. Ice maker heater is driven to a temperature. If temperatures not reached, a time delay shuts it down. Possible heater issue.
E4 = Dry cycle. Unit detected dry cycles above minimum requirement. Possible valve or frozen tube.
E5 = Bad ice maker thermistor, Ice storage temperature satisfied but ice mold in frozen state too long. Possible ice mold thermistor issue.

Service Test - 57: Ice Maker Harvest
Press SW3 to activate a harvest sequence.
NOTE: Digit 1 displays the state of the sequence. Digit 2 displays the outcome of the sequence. Once initiated, the sequence cannot be exited.
Digit 1 (0 = heater and motor off, 1 = ice maker heater on, 2 = motor rotating clockwise until it finds home position)
Digit 2 (0 = in progress, 1 = harvesting completed, 2 = harvesting not completed). Doors must be closed.
NOTE: “Harvesting not completed” does not exit the step, but indicates the time-out of 70 seconds has passed.

Service Test - 58: Ice Maker Heater Activation and Thermistor
Press SW3 to activate the ice maker heater and to toggle between on and off.
NOTE: Digit 1 displays the state of the heater. Digit 2 displays the thermistor state.
Digit 1 (0 = ice maker heater off, 1 = ice maker heater on)
Digit 2 (0 = temperature warmer than harvest temperature, 1 = temperature cooler than harvest temperature, 2 = open, 3 = short)

Service Test - 59: Ice Maker Motor
Press SW3 to activate a motor sequence and toggle through each step.
NOTE: Digit 1 displays the state of the motor. Digit 2 displays the status of the motor. Once initiated, the sequence cannot be exited.
Digit 1 (0 = motor off, 1 = motor rotating clockwise until home position, 2 = motor off, 3 = motor rotating counterclockwise until home position)
Digit 2 (0 = in progress, 1 = harvesting completed, 2 = harvesting not completed)
NOTE: “Harvesting not completed” does not exit the step, but indicates the time-out of 70 seconds has passed.

Ice maker not working

Hi Rick,

Nope. Mine looks like this. 20180517_143341.jpg 20180517_143356.jpg

One set is on the front of the door the other is on the door jam by the lever that opens the ice maker door.

The refrigerator model number is KRFC704FPS.

Please let me know if the pictures didn't come through, I have never uploaded pictures on this forum before.

For future reference on that model it's clipped to the bottom frame inside the machine compartment next to the compressor and water valve.

Hi bigbuck. I don't know how to start to thank you for this wealth of information. A lot of it is above my head but I have a friend who is a appliance service tech so I'm sure he will be able to track down my problem. Again, thank you, thank you and thank you!

Keep both “—” and “—” temperature buttons pressed for 3 seconds. Countdown will display and a chime will play upon entry into Service mode.

Increment Key for Navigation use the “+” button on the upper 7 segment display

Decrement Key for Navigation use the "-" button on the upper 7 segment display

Run service test #97 press "Drawer"

Service Test - 97 Door Ice Maker Valve General Test
• When entering Service Test, the Door Ice Maker Water Valve turns on for 7 seconds.

I did this test and the IM water inlet valve turned on for the 7 seconds and some water was put into the ice tray. So it looks like the IM water inlet valve is working. The ice maker that came with the unit was outdated so I replaced with a new one I had bought earlier. I guess now it's just a waiting game to see if that was my problem. Does the IM control the temperature? As I said in an earlier post as the IM was going south the little bit of ice that was made was melting in the ice bin.

It sounds like the ice maker is the problem. If there's no (or very little) ice in the ice maker it will still start a harvest cycle and turn the mold heater on. After the harvest cycle it fails to call for water. The water cools the ice mold. The heat remains long enough to start melting the ice that's there.

OK, you'll need to follow the steps in the service bulletin bigbuck posted in post #8.

Don't know if you can help me but I ran a bunch of tests and this is the results. I did replace the ice maker/tray with an up to date one. Kitchen Aid said to replace the ice maker if it was made before June of 2017 and the one that came with it was made in 2016.

Test 14: 59 degrees
Test 16: 57 degrees
Test 31: 57 degrees
Test 66: on
Test 79: ok
Test 97: ok
Test 115: Just goes to "1" and stays there.
Test 120: All passed
Test 128: Shows 4, then 0 then 0 once more and then goes blank. Never get the XX YY ZZ software code like they say in the service manual.

May be wrong but I'm leaning towards the Main Control board. However, the water dispenser and refrigerator system work perfect so I'm still scratching my head on this damn thing. Your thoughts or ideals?
