Hi all,

Here of late, some of our clothes appear to have oily stains on them, and we are not sure where this is coming from. Could these oily stains be coming from the washing machine? If so, how can I confirm this? I replaced the sleeve bearing, and accompanying parts, nine years ago with great successs with the help of this forum...

https://www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/threads/basket-not-spinning.40846/

For what it's worth, I removed the agitator and cleaned what looked like a dark dried greasy residue from under the agitator and from the basket near the shaft (old dried up detergent residue?). If the transmission is leaking oil into the tub, will I have to redo all of my previous repair, and how difficult is it to replace the top transmission oil seal?

Other than the oily stains, the machine runs great.

On the other hand, could these stains be coming from the dryer? It is a 20-year old Kenmore (Whirlpool) with the lint filter on top of the lid.

Hi,

Please post some pictures of the clothes with the mark(s) on them.

Here's the best image (2) I have so far. I'll post others ASAP.

Both photos are from the back of one of my T-shirts.

1) Does the mark wash out? (if it does wash out = not oil)
2) Does look more like a washer issue than an dryer issue.
3) Only item on your washer with oil in it and this oil can get onto the cloths is the tranny/gearbox.

1) No, the stains haven't washed out so far.

3) If it is the transmission, I assume water is getting into the gearbox too? There is an O ring available for the shaft...

Is this the faulty part?

As much as I like this machine, I've been entertaining thoughts of replacing it, but I am not sure yet.

Oil can come out without water making it's way in.....but I tend to agree with you, there probably is water in there now :(
If oil can pass one way, water can certainly as well.

Is this the faulty part?

That is the upper one seal. Shaft is probably also scored.

*Bump*

Should I look for a replacement transmission, or should I replace the washer?

If I replace the transmission, I assume I will need to replace the tub seal, sleeve bearing, tub nut (or whatever it's called) - practically everything I replaced nine years ago?

Here's a used transmission...

If I decide to replace the washing machine, can you make a recommendation? (made in America, hopefully)

Jeff is taking personal time off.

Its time to replace the washer IMO.

Speed Queen, Maytag, Whirlpool are the top 3.:)

Not trying to beat a dead horse here, but why am I not seeing oil droplets floating in plain water after running the agitator for five or ten minutes with no clothes in the washer (after the turbulence stops)? Could it be our liquid HE detergent (Tide) is leaving an oily residue on some of the clothes? We do not dilute the detergent (poured directly on dry laundry; away from the water inlet) while the washer is filling.

Interesting thread here...

A friend of ours has a newer Maytag with a glass lid (no agitator). It works fairly well from what I can see.

That's a good question, but I don't know, sorry.
