My 24 year old Maytag washer (LAT9706AAM) blew the fuse in January for the first time in 24 years. A replacement fuse fixed the washer and it worked perfectly for 6 weeks and then the fuse blew again. This time I replaced it with a slow blow fuse of the same amp and volts. It lasted 5 minutes. I then replaced it with the type of fuse that I used back in January's repair and the washer has worked OK for now. I am not optimistic that this fuse may not blow again. What could be causing the fuse to blow?

When the fuse keeps blowing you have to replace the entire lid switch assembly.

Look here:

Here's the lid switch assembly for your model for your model you can order:
WP22001682 Lid Switch Assembly

It comes together in one piece with a new fuse too, there is a video in the part link that shows you how to install it.
