Hello. Our vintage GE Calrod (probably made in the late 50s) has a thermostatically controlled 6" left front burner.
One day this burner would not turn off, so after making sure the problem wasn't with the spring loaded button in the middle of the burner, I disconnected the thermostat.
I have checked online for a new or used replacement thermostat (Hotpoint Cat. No, 278C436G3) to no avail.
Deciding that we don't necessarily need or want a thermostat to operate a burner in that location:
I found a modern GE infinite burner switch that would work with this1325 Watt 6" burner.
The burners on this stove all have 3 wires. Black (hot), Red (hot) and a White (Neutral). I see where they all connect to the existing thermostat, but newer modern switches (for 2 wire burners) don't seem to have a connection for the Neutral.
QUESTION: On a modern switch, the connections are L1 (Black hot), L2 (Red Hot), H1 (to burner), H2 (to burner), and P (for indicator light). What do I do with this neutral wire from the 1950's burner? Where do I connect it?
I have the wiring diagram for this stove if needed, and pictures, but maybe this is enough of a description for someone to help.

There isn't usually a "neutral" going to an element. It may be a common connection, common between the two separate coils older surface elements often consists of.

To use a modern switch with such an element the two separate element terminals would usually need to be jumpered together. The switch wiring would then connect to that jumpered terminal and the other, common element terminal so both element coils are energized at the same time by power from the switch.

Dan, Thanks so much for this information, and for responding so quickly! I have been trying to figure this out for weeks, and have not been able to find any exact info about my particular situation. Have a great evening as you have made my day. Happy Wifey Happy Lifey ..... and she loves her stove. Thank you, sir.

Hi Dave,
I have the same stove and the same switch/thermostat needing relacement or repair. Can you let me know what infinte switch you bought and if it worked with the original front panel knob and mounting holes? Thanks in advance!
