When I open the door to the ice maker it is frozen to the interior housing. I thaw it out and remove the ice cube bin, reinsert it, close the ice maker door and check back on it latter water pours out of it, but there is water in the ice maker itself and it does produce ice. So it seems as though either not all the water is making it to the ice maker, or the ice maker is receiving too much water.
I would like to watch the water being dispensed into the ice maker but haven't figured out a way to do that. I do have very hard water and was wondering if a build up of calcium somewhere in the icemaker is causing this problem, and if so, how would i go about using something like vinegar to remove the build up. I could just ignore the problem as the ice maker does create and dispense ice, but I'd rather not.

Any ideas on how to diagnose the issue would be appreciated.

Thanks, Glenn

Hi Glenn,

I helped another person with a similar issue:

I'd replace both water inlet valves due to your hard water issue, no way I know of to clean them out with vinegar.

Also when was the last time you replaced the water filter?

Here's the water filter for your model: AGF80300704

Here's a video in this thread about the water filter:

Thanks Jake for the information. I did replace the water filter as part of my investigation into this problem. I ended up removing the ice maker. Behind it was all frozen water as this issue has been happening for a while. The problem ended up being that the water opening into the ice make was clogged with hard water deposits. I used some vinegar and soaked the end of the tube for a while then cleaned out the end of the tube. Now it works as expected. I guess I'll need to do this again in another 4 years.

So glad I found this forum!
Wanted to add just in case it might be helpful. We had a similar issue and paid someone to "not" fix it. Finally, we discovered that there was indeed a calcium build-up. This was causing the water to direct its aim incorrectly, causing water to leak down and freeze everything solid. (We have hard water and a large filter we change every six months that helps, but occasionally stuff just calcs up.) We used some CLR to dissolve the calcium and then ran several loads of ice through to be sure there was no chemical left in any of the system. We tried vinegar, but it wasn't strong enough.
