Good morning,

I hope you can please help me figure out why this 2016 dishwasher is mysteriously accumulating smelly water, even after successfully draining at the end of a cleaning cycle at the bottom area.

The dishwasher Filter was checked and during the draining cycle I could clearly see the water streaming strongly into the garbage disposal hole from looking down from top of the sink.

At first I thought someone had been accidentally starting a cleaning cycle and interrupted it, leaving water trapped in the bottom. So I quickly ran the drain cycle and then ran a turbo cycle with dishwasher detergent. It operated normally and all water was emptied after the end and of the turbo cycle.

Then the smelly water appeared in the bottom again, so I repeated what I did previously and this time I set the Child Lock, to prevent accidental occurrence of starting the dishwasher.

Then is happened again! After I had a difficult time remembering how to disable the Child Lock, I ran the drain cycle, then the turbo cycle and it cleared the smelly water, but now the strong smelly oder is not dissipating as much.

Since then, the problem continually persists and the smelly water oder is starting to fill the house.

Could it be that dirty water is somehow back-flowing from the garbage disposal through the drain hose into the dishwasher’s sump collection area in the bottom?

Thanks for your help and appreciate your advice.

Ed

Hi Ed,

---->Make sure your dishwasher drain hose has a high loop in it before it connects to the garbage disposal or sink plumbing, or you get dirty water back into the dishwasher.

You can see how it has to loop in Fig 1, Fig 1a, Fig 2 here:

Hi Jake,

You were spot on; the lack of a “high loop” at the garbage disposal was the problem. I secured the drain hose along with some “strong zip ties” at a couple of places, but I installed an anchored clamp to help preserve high loop.

Thanks,

Ed
