We purchased our refrigerator Nov 2014 and have had minimal issues with the refrigerator until July 15, 2022. I noticed our refrigerator was having difficulty keeping cool enough affecting the icemaker. Ice started to stick in the maker and minimal amounts of ice was being made over long periods of time. Additionally, the top shelves of the refrigerator were not cooling properly or holding a temperature below 47 degrees.

A service technician assessed the refrigerator and advised the compressor was going out, having difficulty functioning properly. The refrigerator experience periods of improvement but once doors started being opened and closed it could not keep anything cool. The freezer has had less activity, so it remains fairly cool. Temps were set at 37 degrees refrigerator and -2 degrees freezer which the unit has not managed well.

LG offered to replace the compressor, but we would have to pay the labor (estimates $700 - 850). The repairs would have a 30-day warranty and warning that evaporator or fans could go out and wouldn't be covered under this repair. Now, I feel a refrigerator should last longer than 8 years and that a manufacturer should stand behind known compressor failure issues.

The issues are well documented on the internet and to be fair, there are other brands noted as well. The question is: would you recommend repairing or purchasing new?

Yes, unfortunately eventhough the compressor is covered by warranty, the labor to replace it is not, that's common on most brands as well.

The average life of refrigerators now is only 8-12 years, the good old days of 20 to 30 years are long gone.

So yes its best to save your repair money for a new refrigerator.
