Maytag A212, won't agitate, burning smell but can spin and drain...

I have an old Maytag A212 that has been going strong for decades without much problems.

It did have to have its "timer" and at least one of the belts very recently replaced but had been going well since then.

It now no longer wants to agitate and it gets more noisy and has a burning smell (I can barely smell, someone else told me that there was a burning smell).

If I put it in the spin cycle it spins very well and drains properly...

What could be the problem?
