I have a 8 year old Maytag french door bottom freezer refrigerator. This morning it sounded as if the compressor was kicking on, then the front panel went out, then the compressor seemed to kick on again then the front panel went out again. It did this about 10 times. I moved all food to our other refrigerator so we could look at this one and see what was going on. Since removing the food, it has worked fine for 4-5 hours. Still trying to figure out what happened - we unplugged it for about an hour.

Went to plug it back in and it has power, however no display on the front panel. If I press any button on the panel 888 888 appears. From reading about others and troubleshooting - some sites say is the motherboard on the back side of the refrigerator and some say the front display panel, some say both...

We’d like to do the repairs ourselves, but don’t want to go at it blindly. These parts are $130-150 each and adding a technician labor on top of that we could be over half way to the cost of a new refrigerator. Can anyone help tell us if either of these the problem, and if so, is there a way I can test to see which part is bad instead of just replacing?

Hi Smitty,

It's going to be the main control board behind the machine. Seen this many times on my service calls.

Here's the main control board for your model you can order:

Thanks! So looking at the control board, it looks as if I am just unplugging the 4 wire connectors, installing the new board, then plugging back in the 4 wire connectors to the new board. Once that is done will I need to program it by pressing the door alarm button and then the down control for the freezer?

Yes Smitty, that is correct for replacing the control board.

I'm attaching your tech data sheet below, it has the instructions to PROGRAM it after you install it.:)

Let us know how it goes.

Replaced the rear electronic control panel with the part you suggested - refrigerator is working again!! Thank you so much for your help! For some reason, the programming was a little different as I had to hold water button down, then freezer down button, then release water button, then release freezer down button. This got me into the programming mode. Then the rest of the instructions were the same.
