Hi there! I have a Maytag mvwc565fw1 my wife called today to tell me it was grinding a little when trying to agitate and it wasn’t agitating well. I replaced the hub last year. So I checked that first. The splines look fine. I think the splines are ok on the drive shaft, but it looks like the agitator splines are worn down. Also when I went to remove the screw from the agitator, it was loose. Any idea what would cause that?

I took as good of a picture as I could. Do you think this is a correct diagnosis?

Also. We deep cleaned this thing about 6 months ago and it’s gross again! We do have five children 10 and under so we do a lot of laundry. Maybe need to look at something heavier duty.

Yes.

Here is the replacement agitator:

That is common. The agitator drive block is only soft, white metal. The agitator shaft is hardened metal and much more durable.

It might be worn a bit and slightly loose. After replacing the agitator keep an eye on it. It might need to be replaced as well. I probably wouldn't recommend Loctite as the agitator will likely need to be removed again in future although the new bolt (see the following link) looks to have something similar on its threads.

We deep cleaned this thing about 6 months ago and it’s gross again!

Maybe try to do more 'hot' washes, cut back a bit on detergent and maybe periodically use a washer cleaner like:

Thanks so much for the reply, and the links! I've ordered a new agitator from RepairClinic. Should be here, tomorrow. I'll let you know how things work out!

Got the part in and installed. Everything seems to be working well! Since I had already gotten the agitator freed up, it only took a couple minutes. Thanks for the help!

Also, on a side note: I wrapped just a little electrical tape around the shaft and we were able to do a few loads while we waited on the agitator to arrive.
