Maytag Neptune - Too Hot!

Always runs at what I assume is maximum heat, except on "Air Fluff". Even on UltraCare setting.

Temp: 150 degrees at vent on any heat setting (delicate-regular, ultra care)

Air Fluff = No heat

Vent is clear.

Continuity Tests:
L150-15F thermostat - 0.5ohm between two outside terminals - 30ohm resistance between two inside terminals

L130-10f thermostat (Ultra Care I think) - 0 ohm

Switch: Not tested. Not sure what to test.

Is the L150 bad? Would that keep Ultra Care from working? Switch? Controll Board?, Elements?

Thanks much for your help.

Hi,

The heater will turn on and off throughout the cycle, when you check the temperature, what is the low reading when the heater has been off awhile after it reaches 150? Should be about 115-120.

Jake

Temps

Thanks,

I went through several cycles of max/min temps for each of the following settings.

Regular (Hottest settting) - 150min-160max degrees
Delicate (Lowest standard setting) - 150min-160max degrees
Ultra Care (per Maytag the "lowest heated dry temperature possible") - 125min-140max

As you can see, the temerature slider switch seems to have no effect and the Ultra Care is still too hot. The elements are cycling on and off.

Whats the serial# of your dryer?

Jake

Now when your testing the temperatures are you testing it with no clothes in it? and no exhaust vent on?

Jake

Yes

No clothes. There was no exhaust vent in play. The vent hose was detached fron the wall. I measured air at the end of about 4 foot vent hose. I was careful to gauge the air and NOT the hose surface.

No obstruction

I also check for obstruction. Vent system is clear from thermostat to end of hose. There is strong air flow out of the hose.

Timed Functions

I'm not sure this is relevant, but I did note one other thing. The timed functions seem to work. The "cool down" part of the cycle does gradually reduce the temp to unheated. The unheated parts of the cycles work as well ("press care", and "wrinkle free"). These are 5-20 minute periods of unheated tumbling at the end of two different cycles.

Ok, this is something I don't see happen much, and I don't want to lead to a wrong part to get, so I'm going to see if another tech. knows what may be causing it.

We would normally record the on and off temps.
EG: 110 heat on and 160 heat off = 135ºF average or mean temp.

I found this...

Issue
Blower noise or Tumbler temperature higher than normal.

Action
Check for damage to the blower housing due to product handling. Blower housing will show damage in the front, at the tab that fastens to the base as shown below. Replace damaged parts as necessary. Damage results in the Blower Wheel contacting the housing during operation.

Has the element been checked for being grounded?
Operating thermostat heater receiving power to cycle for lower temps? ( 2 smaller wires on the thermostat )

Thermostat facing been cleaned from any bounce sheet gookus?

jeff.

I think that's what I did. 150 heat on; 160 heat off = 155 mean temp - on delicate (low) or regular (high) and anywhere in between.

No damage.

Has the element been checked for being grounded?
Does not appear to be grounded. When the element cycles off, ALL of the coils go off.

Operating thermostat heater receiving power to cycle for lower temps? ( 2 smaller wires on the thermostat )
Not sure how to check this properly. The large red wire is hot. All terminals read hot when red is connected (verifying continuity?)

Yes.

Is there a way to check the temp switch? It is a slider switch from reg-delicate + air fluff

Thanks.

150 heat on; 160 heat off

Off temp is ok....on temps normally should cool down to more like 110-120ºF before the heat will cycle back on.

Not sure how to check this properly. The large red wire is hot. All terminals read hot when red is connected (verifying continuity?)

Outside terminals cycle the element on and off, smaller inside ones are a heater inside the thermostat. This heater warms up the thermostat so it will cycle sooner for lower temps/heat. Heater is feed power.

Is there a way to check the temp switch?

Ohmed as per the wire diagram that comes with the dryer....

That shoud vary the voltage going to the thermostat heater.

Problem Solved

Thanks guys.

It was the tempertaure switch.

You can test the switch by:
1) Disconnect power
2) disconnect purple and white (top) wires
3) Check resistance between those 2 terminals at various settings
delicate - should be about 2.5 ohm, med - 8ohm, just less than reg 30 ohm, reg infinity (air fluff is infinity as well)

The bad switch read infinity on any setting.

Good job fixing it jodygo.:)

Thanks Jeff for your help too.:)

Here's the temperature switch for your model, in case others run into this same issue as well and need to order it:
