I have a Maytag Performa PAV3300AWW Rev 12 Serial 12038249ZF that while washing makes a horrible grinding sound in the same cadence as the agitator. Eventually the agitator stops but the grinding sound continues. It sounds like metal gears that are stripped or grinding on each other. Could it be the tranny has worn out? It spins fine with no weird sounds. Thanks for the help.

If it is the tranny is it worth fixing? Tranny PN?

Hi,

Could it be the tranny has worn out?

Sounds like it yes ( no pun intended ).

If it is the tranny is it worth fixing?

Not likely...

Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. I tipped the washer on its side and removed the belt. The underneath side of the washer, belt and pullies had a greasey oily filem on them. It was dripping around teh edge of the frame. I turned the main pulley and the motion was smooth. I turn it the other way and could hear a feel the grinding crunching of gears.

Almost like a seal failed or something.

Oil seal in the bottom of the tranny :(
New washer time or BIG$ repair.

It's new washer time! Since you are in the repair biz, can you recommend a brand or anything on selecting a new washer. Are the front loaders all they are hyped up to be? Any advice welcome.

*I* will only use front loads now as they save on water, hydro and soap.....but if you cannot repair yourself an extended warranty is often a good idea as most machines today are full of electronics.

Whirlpool or Maytag are still good choices.
