Our old Maytag LAT8904AAE top loader washer surprised us with a burning smell this morning. After tipping it up to check the belts I noticed the pully under the tub spins but the tub does not move. I forgot there is a transmission between the belt pully and the tub so the pully moving may not be important... and I don't recall if I tried to move it in both directions. The pump seems to be working ok.

I did notice some fine dark gray powder on the base under the transmission assembly. Photo attached.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thank you.

Looks like your brake is leaking out grease, thus it's not working properly anymore.

Here's the brake assembly for your model:
WP6-2011900 Brake Assembly

Video included in part link, but that brake tool is no longer available, you may be able to go to a local appliance repair shop in your area and they may let you borrow or rent theirs.:)
