• ** REMEMBER! **The microwave can still shock you even unplugged!!

ALWAYS discharge the high-voltage capacitor first if you even think your hands will come close to any HIGH VOLTAGE components.

Jeff mentions this: Anything in the high voltage ( magnetron, capacitor, diode, wires to and from ):
...Use a metal ( not the shiny chrome type ) screw driver with a insulated handle to short across ( touch both at the same time ) the terminals of the high voltage capacitor to discharge it.

I have a Maytag over the range microwave. A while ago it stopped heating food. EVERYTHING else works. I thought it was the magnetron or diode but did a bit of troubleshooting.

The microwave works fine as long as the vent fan is on. If the fan is off then the microwave wont heat. Everything else works like the display, timer, light, platter etc. But turn the fan on and it starts working again. I would have thought the fan portion is an entirely separate thing because it's purpose is to vent air for the stove below it. The microwave should work (and did used to work) without the need for the vent fan.

Any ideas??

Hi,

Odd problem!
Haven't seen nor ran into that before.

Maybe the magnetron cooling fan inside has quit and the mag is shutting off on a thermostat? The exhaust fan is moving enough air to help keep it cool??

I have the same problem on a GE CVM9215SL1SS Cafe over range manufactured 7/17. It works fine only if the vent fan is on any mode. Vent fan off it wont heat at all.
