My Maytag washer MVWX655DW1 is approaching 3 years old. This past February it began having problems with the agitation mode and ended up needing a new hub assembly W10528947. It worked like new after replacing the hub but that one lasted only about 3 months and then the same symptoms as before led to another hub. That hub last about a month and now I am replacing the hub every 3-4 weeks.

I have mostly used genuine factory hubs as well as a cheaper option off Amazon but the results are the same. I have now used eight hubs and am considering buying them in bulk. Our household includes me, my wife, and a son. We run the washer twice a day seven days a week to keep the loads small.

We are washing bath towels, sheets, and clothes. No heavy bedspreads or quilts or big loads. I replaced the splutch assembly recently to see if that might help, but it did not. The hub stripped several days later at the end of the 3-4 week mark. Besides this hub stripping issue, the machine works perfectly. It sounds normal and has no leaks and cleans the clothes when it is working.

Can anyone help me solve this issue? Any help is very appreciated.

This is unheard of, I've never replaced more than 1 ever. In fact click here: https://www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/search/47387/?q=W10528947&o=relevance and you will see hundreds of other people replace those same hubs and no one ever replaced one twice.

Where are you getting the genuine factory hubs at? Because they are not OEM either if they are wearing out that quick.

Here's the OEM hub for your model:

At AppliancePartsPros and RepairClinic both sites are OEM only and have 365 days warranty on ALL parts!

Thank you very much for the reply. The first hub I purchased this past Feb was from a reputable appliance parts dealer here where I live in middle Georgia. It came in the packaging shown in this photo. That hub lasted 3 months. I have purchased the others primarily from an Amazon dealer and the packaging for most has been identical to the factory one I purchased here locally. As you suggest, I will go ahead and purchase one from Appliance Parts Pros or Repair Clinic with the one year warranty. I hope you are right and that the issue is only inferior hubs.

Thanks for directing me to Appliance Parts Pros from whom I plan to order a hub. I noticed on the page for the part a thread referencing a very similar issue described here.

Ok, good find!

Did you check all of what they said?

ANSWER John, Check and make sure the hub clip is in the proper position on the output shaft and snapped/locked in place. You can also remove the wash plate and tub, check for any damage to the bottom side of the wash plate and the area around it in the tub this would indicate damage from articles getting "stuck" between the wash plate and tub (coins, zippers, buttons, etc.) You may want to remove the spin basket and check for articles between and under the tub. If all's OK, suspect improper loading, overloading the wash basket causing the hub splines to wear out prematurely.

You say your not overloading the washer, so we can eliminate that.

--->Check and make sure the hub clip is in the proper position on the output shaft and snapped/locked in place.

If all that is fine of what they mentioned to check then the only other part to cause is the transmission.

Thank you. I will report back here if I can solve my issue with any of the above suggestions.

Ok, sounds good, yes please do, I'm very curious myself.:)

I wanted to circle back to this since it has been a few months. I replaced the splutch assembly back in late November 2020. The hub, which normally stripped after about a month, last almost 6 weeks, then it stripped also. Since then I have continued to use a new hub about every 4 weeks. I am attaching a photo of the shaft. You can see how worn the splines are in the lower portion. They are sharp to the touch. This is what makes contact where the hub strips. Any advice is appreciated.

Do you have the exact same model MVWX655DW1 ?

Your transmission shaft is the problem causing it to continually wear out the hub. You'd need to replace the transmission to fix it permanently.

I do not know if Maytag's 10 Year motor warranty will extend to the drive shaft.
I wouldn't think so, but you can always ask them if you want.
