I have taken my refrigerator partly apart. The compressor runs, and gets very hot to the touch. Inside, the evaporator has frost on the first few inches of the tube where the freon enters the evaporator, but the rest of the evaporator is pretty much room temperature. The problem is not the defrost timer, the defrost thermostat, or the evap fan. I'm thinking it's low on freon? The fridge is 10 years old. Is it worth calling a repairman, or will a recharge likely just leak out right away?

Any help is appreciated before I pay a repairman to come tell me to junk it. It's a nice stainless steel fridge with glass shelves.

Yup, you have a sealed system/compressor issue. Would cost more to fix than its worth.

Time to go refrigerator shopping.
