Maytag dishwasher suddenly stops working part way thru the cycle. Water still inside when this happens. This first happened 5 months ago.

None of the buttons on control panel light up. Confirmed power is getting to control board. Breaker never tripped. Confirmed continuity on thermal fuse. Confirmed door latch functioning (continuity on both switches). No burn marks on control board. Replaced board with an ebay refurbished board - everything works again!... but only for 5 months.

Now it's broken again. Same symptoms. Major deja vu! Confirmed OK on power, thermal fuse, door latch. No burn marks on control board.

I thought maybe something is arcing or surging? But the breaker is fine and I confirmed the wires are modern (yellow Romex). Checked wires on the outlet and they're fine (tight, no burns... no wire nuts even). Also, it's the only thing on the circuit.

I had my electrical upgraded to brand new Square D panels and breakers 2 months prior to the first failure. Whole home surge protector and generator hookup installed during that visit.

I can replace the control board again, but I'm worried that's just band-aiding the problem. Any help on root cause and parts to order would be much appreciated!

That's the problem. Parts on ebay will not last long.

You will need the NEW OEM control board to fix it permanently.

Here's the control board for your model:

Trust me, I've replaced many of these same control boards and NEVER had to go on call back.:)

I always use NEW OEM parts for my customers, because I hate call backs. LOL

Ok sounds good, let us know how it goes.

Update: replaced the refurbed control board with a brand new OEM board from AppliancePartsPros.com... worked great! But only for a week.

I haven't disassembled yet to check the board, but I'm guessing I'm not at the root cause yet. I'm wondering if there could be a motor going bad that's creating a voltage spike?

Any advice or wires to check with my multi while I'm in there would be much appreciated!

Our first replacement lasted three years or so and the dishwasher was four years old at that point. It is a great dishwasher but this is the third control board in about 8 years including the original board. I can’t think we are the only ones with this problem. .

That's very strange, I don't know the root cause, This has never happened to me before in my 35 years as a career appliance tech, and I've replaced 50 to 100 of these control boards and never had a call back.

So you may need to contact Maytag to come out and they can contact the factory to get to the root of the problem.

Thank you. It is about 8 years old now so I don’t know if they would still service it. Now with the new control board back to being perfect again.

JAKE, I have one last question. Where can I find a good owners manual for this machine? I am trying to find out why sometimes you have to hit the start button twice (if using the same wash cycle) to start and only once when choosing a different wash cycle.
Thanks,
Rachael

No, you shouldn't have to press the start button twice.

Here's the owners manual: https://s3.amazonaws.com/sm-backend-production-attachments/owners-manual-W10596271-RevA.pdf

I answered your other question here on that too:

Jake

Thank you Jake. I have no idea why it would have to be pushed twice on a repeat cycle. I tried to just press once and it would not come on. It has been like that since the day we bought it.
If we are starting a different cycle, we pick the cycle and push start and it starts. If we are using the same cycle that is in memory we have to push start once (it recalls the cycle in memory) and if we do nothing within a few seconds it shuts off. We have to push start a second time to start it.
Thank you for the manual.

Thanks Jake. I just finished disassembling and nothing interesting to report. No burn marks. Continuity on thermal fuse. Let's see what Maytag says...

I own a 2014 Maytag dishwasher and I load the dishes and load the detergent and close the door and push the buttons for the wash cycle and options, then press start once and it starts. Now if you are pressing start BEFORE you close the door, that might be why you are pressing it again once the door is closed?

Ok sounds good, yes let us know what they say I'm very curious myself.

Jake

Hi Jake, No I wait and press it after the door is closed. I load the dishes, close the door, select options, press start once and it turns on.
If I am not changing the cycle I close the door, press start, the last cycle comes up in memory and I press start. Nothing happens so I have to press start again or it will just turn off. 🤷‍♀️

That's very strange, the owners manual says nothing about that.

Only thing it says is this:
Start or Resume a Cycle
--->Run hot water at the sink nearest your dishwasher until the water is hot. Turn off water.
--->Push door firmly closed. The door latches automatically. Select the wash cycle and options desired and press START/RESUME OR press START/RESUME to repeat the same cycle and options as in the previous wash cycle.
--->You can add an item anytime before the main wash starts.
Open the door slowly and add the item. Close the door firmly.
Press the START/RESUME button, the cycle resumes automatically at the point of interruption.
For fully integrated models (controls on top of console)
--->Select the wash cycle and options desired.
--->Press the START/RESUME button once and close the door.
After a brief pause, the cycle will begin. The door must be closed within 3 seconds after pushing START/RESUME or the lights will flash, and the dishwasher will not begin. Press the START/RESUME button again and shut the door within
3 seconds.

You can add an item anytime before the main wash starts. Open the door slowly and add the item. Press the START/RESUME then close the door.

Jake

That's the official owners manual for your model, so unless you gave me a different model number, it should work like that.:)

At any rate if you plan to keep this dishwasher its best to have Maytag come out to investigate the root cause the the control board failures, because I've had my dishwasher since new in 2014 and its never had a single problem, no control board failures at all period.:)

Jake

Your welcome Rachael!

Sounds good Rachael.(y)
