My fridge is not cooling enough. I have checked both fans both are running. The condenser is clean and the evaporator has light frost. I did find that opening the door would allow air to come out the top vent.

Which lead me to the return was plugged with ice. I got all the ice out with a blow dryer and poured hot water in the return which came out in the bottom of freezer.

The freezer section is making ice fine. I even feel cold air and ice starting to form on the top inlet but it has been running for 7 hours and fridge is still not cold enough. I thought once I got the return unplugged and air flowing I was in the home stretch but not so much.

Like I said no issues in freezer and I can feel cold air coming into fridge Im at a loss. I made sure the top vent is wide open also. Its like even though the evaporator fan is blowing its not getting enough cold air into the fridge section.

Any advice would be great thanks. Fridge is apron 17 year old. thx

update it just went into defrost I definitely hear water running down in drain pan and I feel heat from element. So it appears just to be circulation problem.

When the fan is on it definitely is running fast enough to blow to the top and suck air from the return. One thing I didn't check was behind where the water come in for ice maker maybe there something blocking proper air flow to the top?

Also even though water flowed through the return fine is it possible something like a piece of foam has broker off and is blocking the return? I'm just stumped

Hi,

I'd first remove the air damper (diffuser) and check to see if its clogged up with frost/ice or the damper door is broken on it, causing it not to open fully to cool the refrigerator section properly. If it's just frost/ice clogging it, then clear out all the frost/ice from it and you should be good to go.:)

Here's the air diffuser for your model:

When you click the part link to it, there is a video that shows you "how to" remove/replace it.

Let us know what you find.

I took it completely out it was the first thing I did it’s wide open and still not enough airflow I forgot to mention I checked that before I found the return iced up even though I feel air it’s not enough to drop the temp correctly I checked this morning and it was 45F.

I thought fixing the return icing was the ticket I defrosted with hair dry and then poured water until I seen it come out the drain. I wonder if the path between return vent and drain may be iced up again from pouring hot water down it?

It still seems to blow more with freezer door open. However it still doesn’t seem enough and the fan is clean and going fast. I have frosty air swirling around in the freezer.

Yes, that return air duct is still clogged.
