I have a GE Versatronic American Dryer (early 70's?) that is making noise when it spins and also it does not spin smoothly.

I have never worked on this machine before and I'm wondering if parts are available and where I should look for them. It's a very nice machine and I would like to keep it in service.

Does it need new bearings most likely?

I attached photos that include the model and serial number.

Very grateful for any assistance.

The drum is supported by and rides on 'slides' at the font. They wear and result in noise when running. It might also be wear of the rear drum shaft and bearing. Both were common maintenance areas.

I'm afraid I can't find any videos of that age of product. There is a written description of the job on a slightly newer (but still old) GE dryer design. They may not be exact for your even older model. (The even newer models are designed much differently.)

Note: The part # quoted at the above page is not the same as the ones used on your model. They're a slightly newer version.

wondering if parts are available

Maybe...

The parts in question are discontinued and NLA through normal channels. You can however find some old stock available at the following links... while they last.

LINK > Older GE Dryer WE13X93 Drum Slides (2 available)

Two are used and likely both are required. There are some single drum slides available at this link if you need to order separate slides.

LINK > Older GE Dryer Drum Slide WE13X93 (individuals)

If needed, the rear drum shaft and bearing kit is also discontinued but old stock is available at this link:

Other areas that should be inspected when opened is make sure the belt tension idler pulley isn't wiggling on its shaft and the blower fan is tight on the motor shaft.

I checked the dryer out more closely and I believe it needs the rear bearing replaced. I attached two 5 second videos that show the noise made when the drum is spun, and also the amount of play in the drum when I press upwards on it.

Is there any way that I can confirm that the parts that you posted links for will be compatible with my machine?

Thank you again.

It's too old, I don't know where you'll find a parts breakdown for it online. You can see a list of parts for it at the following link.

BTW. I spoke too soon, the OEM rear drum shaft and bearing kit is still available through regular sources but not the drum slides which are discontinued.
