First of all I would like to say hi. I came across this forum while trying to get a handle on our washing machine woes. I like the way questions are answered and there seem to be a lot of happy forum users. I have done a forum search of our problem but wanted to post a new thread explaining what is going on with our washer.

Our washing machine has been acting up of late. It started with the sd error code at the end of the cycle and progressed to no code, no end of cycle light and the door still locked.
By unplugging and then plugging back in and starting and cancelling a new cycle we could get the door unlocked. The clothes would be quite wet although there did not seem to be any standing water in the drum. Doing a Drain/Spin cycle usually seemed to work to get the water out of the clothes.

After reading other forum posts and answers I did the diagnostic test. The only error code it shows is the F33 code. During the test it would get to the Normal/Casual (Drain pump is ON) step and after some time would trigger the F21 Long Drain code. The pump sounded like it was running but no water was being pumped out of the drum. I would then have to exit the test and do a Drain/Spin cycle to get rid of the water. As soon as the Drain/Spin cycle would start the water would drain normally.

I took the pump off to check for stuff in the coin catcher and to check the impeller. Upon taking the pump apart there was water in the plastic tube that the windings surround. Is that normal?
Also when spinning the impeller, it would have resistance and then spin, have resistance and spin etc.. Again is that normal. When I cleaned and dried out the tube and put the pump back together, I connected it to power and it seemed to run fine. No excessive noise or vibrations. I put it back in the washer and ran another diagnostic test and it did the same thing as the first time. Pump would not pump water out. It almost seemed that no water was going from the tub to the pump. Could the ECO valve be causing this?

Any advice is appreciated and if any further clarifications are needed let me know.

Thanks,
Mike in Canada

Hi Mike! You may have two problems related to each other. I assume you're referring to the pump motor windings that has water in it. That's not good. It means the seals between the pump and pump motor are leaking. It's causing the motor to slow down and exceed the eight minute drain time during the spin or drain cycle or the pressure switch has detected suds still in the hose. When this happens the washer will fill with 4 liters of water and for the next five minutes the unit will rest without tumbling, the water will be drained and it will try to spin or drain again. After 4 minutes you'll see the error code sd and 4 minutes after that the F21 error code. Usually the F21 doesn't show up until you run the diagnostic test cycle. There's no point in taking any resistance measurements on the pump motor. If there's water getting into the motor you need to replace it. It's the water in the motor that's probably causing the F33 error code. The F33 error is the connection between the pump and central control unit was lost. The water probably caused a short or so much resistance the control unit thinks it's open. The central control unit now thinks there's water in the drum and won't unlock the door. Replace the pump/motor and run a normal wash cycle, no clothes and no soap. If the machine completes the cycle without issue run the diagnostic test cycle again and check for error codes. No codes you're good to go. If at any time after replacing the pump/motor you see the sd, F21 or F33 error code you'll need to replace the central control unit.

If the door doesn't unlock again, unplug the washer or disconnect power. Remove the lower kick panel. Reach up along the inside of the front and locate the bottom of the door switch/lock unit. Located on the bottom of the door switch/lock unit is a teardrop shaped tab. Gently pull the tab down about a 1/4˝ or until a click is heard and the door will open. Here's the parts:

Well I thought it was time to do an update on this topic. I ordered the part from the US as my local appliance store quoted me $225 plus tax for the pump.
Now generally I like to shop locally but when I could get the same part from the US for under $100 shipped the local shop lost out. Not sure why the prices
are so way out of line up here but that is a question for another day.

Anyway ever since I reinstalled the original pump we have had no issues with it even though I did a diagnostic after reinstalling and got the error 33 code at that time.
I haven't done another diagnostic test since all seems to be well. So for now I will keep the new pump as a spare and install it when needed.
