I moved into a place with a subzero 550, and all of the refrigerant leaked out due to a leaking Schrader valve. I've replaced the valve core, and it holds vacuum real nice.

This unit was designed for R134a.

Any recommendations for easily obtainable refrigerant? Like a certain brand from an auto parts store? It won't be a problem to measure the correct amount of ounces required.

Well I buy mine by the 30lb jug, way too much for you. How do you plan to do the measuring? Serial #? Ref side or freezer?

I'll be using a scale as usual to measure the refrigerant. It's the ref side, phoenix model P1311855. I'm just wondering if any old automotive R134a will work (not sure if the oils are formulated differently for automotive belt driven compressors and electric driven compressors)

So I found some old pure r134a in a can. My question, is: do you fill the refrigerant while the compressor is running? Or when it's off?

Am I reading correctly, that my 550 serial P1311855 requires 8oz of refrigerant on the ref side?
